Anyone have this gate that doesn't have to be hard mounted to the top of the stairs? I found it at One Step Ahead in their latest catalog where they actually say that it can be used at the top of the stairs and then at safebeginnings.com where they note the "extra strength" of the mounting but don't mention anything about it being safe at the top of the stairs.

I *think* they are the same gate. Anyone have any thoughts? While I certainly don't want to put DD in jeopardy, if we could get away with not hard mounting a gate, that would be fabulous.

Thanks.

Ok, I did a quick search for you on epinions. The gates are the same and they are made by North State Industries. The same gate is availiable at Target from MUCH cheaper! http://tinyurl.com/4gcgj I think it's worth a try. I probably would buy that if I rented a house that had stairs.

If you do decide to go with a hardmounted gate we really like the "First Years Simple and Secure stair gate" best, and the "Kidco Safeway" gate as well. We use the "First Years All Clear Swing Gate" pressure mounted at the bottom of the stairs and that works really well for us. You just pop it on and off as needed. http://tinyurl.com/4ffdk

I have that gate but it is definitely NOT safe for the top of the stairs. I find we need to tighten ours every week with a wrench from everyone going through it. We have this gate at the bottom of the stairs and it can be pushed over by a very determined child.

I also have this gate, and would not use it at the top of the stairs either. I have it going into my family room from kitchen, and it has slid of the walls. HTH

We got our gate at Walmart...made by Regalo. It is VERY sturdy when mounted at the top of stairs..optional small round disks for anchoring are included. We have it installed w/o disks at the top of our stairs and have done EVERYTHING we can think of to budge the thing and it wont move!

I believe we paid around 34.00 for it, it is white metal.
