My computer is making strange noises and I am afraid it is on the fritz. I have backed up photshop on disk. If I needed to get a new computer and loaded those disks on it would I have photoshop like I do now with the browser and photos saved under tags etc. Or would I only have the pictures but not arranged like I see them now. Guess question is how would I restore photoshop? (And I just want to add that I HATE the Photoshop for Dummies book).
Thanks for any help you can give.

Mac or PC? I'm going to assume PC. Is there any way you can backup your entire hard drive to an external drive?

I'm sure BillK will chime in here w/ alot more detailed info!

I agree. Get an external hard drive like this one (or a less expensive one if you don't need as much space -- but I recommend Western Digital as reliable:
http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=110&Language=en

and then get software that will allow you to clone or "mirror" your whole hard disk, like this (for Windows): http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/

Everything will be there and you can run it all from that external disk.

This will also be very helpful when and if you move to a new computer! You can clone from the external hard drive to the new computer. I just got a new work computer (Windows Intel machine) and did this process using the products I link to above, and it worked great. I now use the Acronis software and external hard drive to do incremental backups.

ETA: I have done essentially the same thing with my Mac (non-Intel, OS X) laptop, using a different software package, PsyncX -- it works like Acronis.

I have Photoshop Elements. DH messed up my computer once and while the photos were still there all the tags were lost. I was able to recover all of the tags from the backup disks you can make in Elements. Since you are also backing up the pictures, it seems as though you'd be able to transfer all of it. What a scary idea.

Do a full backup.....use the backup utility in Photoshop elements, and that will save the tags and everything.
The "mirror" may be to complex to do....says my DH the "computer guy".
If you want step by step Susan, he will help you.
We do have ours saved to mirror, with two hard drives, and it was cheap.....I can't walk you through that but he could! LMK.

Thank you all especially Rachel's husband for his kind offer. In The Elements for dummies book it shows a backing up your catalog option (this is what I have been doing) which saves your pics, taga, comments etc to a cd. If my computr dies would I not be able to just instal Elements on the new computer then insert thoses cds and somehow save them to restore what I had before? It seems there should be a way to do this without buying a external hard drive, but I will only if I have to.

Yes, you should be able to install Elements and then insert your back up CD's to recover your pictures complete with Tags. I'm pretty certain you would just tell it to find pictures from the CD drive. Forgive me if I'm sounding vague, but I don't seem to remember having any problems when I either changed computers or went from Album to Elements 4.0.

Hey Susan, Yes you would be able to restore from those disks "theoretically". It is always better to be safe, than sorry. Ideally you would want to have two back-ups. Does that make sense?
