View Full Version : I'm so mad at myself. DS' surgery has been rescheduled for April!

DS was suppose to undergo surgery today at 9 AM for a hernia repair and bilateral orchidopexy. So we get to the hospital bright and early. Everything checks out except that he nursed at 6 AM. The nurses told me that he could have clear liquids (including apple juice) 3 hours before. I misunderstood. I thought that breastmilk counted as a clear liquid. Since it's a 2 hour procedure, the next available date is in April!

I'm so mad at myself. It's my fault, so I'll just ask for the time off again. BUT poor DH. I know he has a lot to do at work this week. I feel bad about him taking the time off (about 3 days) for basically nothing. :(

It's not your fault. The opinion on BM as a clear liquid seems to vary from Doctor to Doctor.

I agree with the PP, if they don't consider BM a clear liquid they should have told you that to begin with.

That sucks!

FWIW, I was told by the ladies at the milk bank I'm hoping to donate to that BM counts as a clear liquid, and babies who are not BF often get scripts for BM when they are going in for surgery for the potential benefits.

Breastmilk IS a clear liquid.

The reason for not eating prior to surgery is the risk of vomiting/aspirating during anesthesia - you wouldn't want the contents of a full stomach to end up in the lungs. But breastmilk is so readily digested, it wouldn't be in the stomach three hours later. Plus, breastmilk is so packed with antibodies, aspiration into the lungs would not pose a significant pneumonia risk.

Sorry DS didn't get his surgery. :(
