With instant messaging programs a buddy's name will pop up on your screen if they're on your list and you're logged on at the same time. I imagine it means something similar here but I'm not certain.

Ah. The answer to this is in the FAQs. It's a shortcut, basically. It gives you a list of your buddies' profiles, email addresses, etc.
