Hello,
Need a quick answer! How many ounces of water is a formula fed newborn allowed in a day?
Thanks,
Kim

Kim.

Certainly not a medical expert here, but I recall hearing that you should not give a newborn water. If I remember correctly, they get all the fluid from the formula and that water can throw off their electrolyte balance (something called water toxicity.) Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

My ped also said not to give water...but I don't remember why...

I give one scoop of formula powder per 2 oz of water...MIXED if that was your question...but I don't think it was...

HTH...

I too was told water was not necessary to give a newborn. When you make up the formula you are already using water and they really don't need any additional water. Though I doubt it would hurt a newborn to give a few ounces. Check with your ped though to be sure.

I just had an infant care class last weekend and they stressed to not give your baby water. All their water needs would be met by their formula or breastmilk. I didn't think to ask why.
