View Full Version : Why Is Justin's New Avatar Not Working?

I decided that I should update Justin's pic. DH uploaded the photo to a website and it shows up in my profile. However, it appears as a red X next to my posts. Any idea what's wrong and/or how to fix it? Is this the bandwidth issue that has been discussed before? I'm sad. Now I can't even see an outdated photo of my little Justin. :(

Edited to add: Okay, now I feel a little silly having posted this because I can see his new avatar next to this post. However, it's still not visible in my old posts. So, I guess the new question is why can't I see it in my old posts?

Here is the layman's answer as best as I can describe.

The way this forum software seems to work is it links a post and avatar together for that moment in time when you posted.

In this thread:

http://www.windsorpeak.com/dcforum/DCForumID30/1480.html

The URL location of your avatar is: http://home.insight.rr.com/nicholsphotos/nicholsphotos/photos/ BB_Photo.jpg (without the spaces)

Because you have most likely taken that photo off the website, the dreaded red-x appears. There are some forums where the avatar is tied to the user id not to the post, so if you make a change on your profile, it changes back in time so to speak on every post associated with your user id. For this forum, it does not appear that is the case.

For posts forward, your new avatar will show until you change it again, but if you delete the file you are using now from the website it will also display the red x at a later time.

Thanks, Flagger. I told DH that you or juliasdad would be able to answer my question. I thought that the old photo was still on the website (we use this website for nothing but hosting these avatar images :)) but I'll have DH work on this based on your post. However, we definitely have removed that URL from my profile if that makes a difference. Thanks, again.

When I put that URL into my browser without the spaces it takes me to a "Page not found" message which makes me think the old picture was taken down. The URL for your current avatar is http://home.insight.rr.com/nicholsphotos/nicholsphotos/photos/ Plaid-Overall-Avatar.jpg

without the spaces, so a different filename all together than the above.

One thing that also happens is that when you change your avator, in an existing thread your avatar remains the previous one, BUT if someone posts to that thread again, then your avator becomes the new one. Kinda strange. You could try posting to an old thread as a test to see if that brings up your avatar.

And Justin is ADORABLE!

Thanks to all who made such sweet comments about Justin's 9 month picture. I think he's pretty adorable myself. :)
