Hi,
I just came back from a reunion weekend and thought it would be fun to share our colleges/grad schools on the boards if you want to. I'll start:

me: BA, University of New Hampshire, 1988
DH: BA, BS, Boston University, 1987; MBA, Harvard, 1998

Maybe we'll make some new connections (other than geographic) this way!

I taught there the summers of '91 and '92, as a way to earn extra money as a grad student. (I got my MS in Statistics at ISU.) I don't think you would have taken what I taught, it was the Introductory Business Statistics class offered at night. Everyone hated the class as a rule and even worse it was from 7-10 pm!!! I figured that you had been to W&L a few times, Neve (or had W&L guys drive up to Hollins). Hollins girls seemed to be all the rage among the undergrad guys. The law school is removed from the frat parties and such, but I was good friends with a W&L alum who was a Sigma Nu and who talked about the various girls' schools in the area. Even though there are women at W&L now, from what I understand, the surrounding girls' schools are still quite popular. There were still homecoming queen candidates from some of the girls' schools when I was there. The law school went co-ed in the mid-1970s, so it was a bit ahead of the undergrad campus. I'm not sure what years you were there, but you didn't happen to know Mike Gray, did you? He graduated in 1992.

Thanks. Finishing was rather a beast - I only had one year left, and commuted to Claremont from San Diego. Writing a thesis while making a 4 hr round trip to go to classes is NOT my idea of fun, but it felt great to finally tie up that loose end.

I was a Religious Studies major, and the RS program became a cross-campus program, so the only school I didn't take any classes at was Mudd.

Incidently, my mother went to Scripps and my father to CMC, which is how they met.

It's a pretty small school though so you might have know him...Jefferson Parker. My SIL maiden name is Trubey and she had an older sister there that graduated in '92, I believe. I bet St Mary's was fun :)...
I went to a big very athletic PUBLIC High School in Fairfax Virignia we won The state Football Championship and it just seemed so "co-ed" so it was a huge difference at Hollins I was not used to all of that like you might have been. I loved hollins so much though, we had some great traditions (as I am sure you did) and I had classes where there were just two of us and we were always taught by our profs no aids...

I just saw the thread about sororities we didn't have them at Hollins but I'm sure you'd agree we all felt like one big sorority...

DH:

You know, music, but decided there was no future in it for him. I have heard him play the piano, but have yet to hear him play the organ!)

I hear ya!!! Hang in there! I find it extremely difficult to balance motherhood and this dissertation at the same time, but we wanted to start a family and I have no regarets whatsoever. We figured, even if I had to take some time off from the dissertation, having our baby was more important. At some point I know I will get this done. Writing my dissertation from DC is not as hard as I thought it would though. I am in constant communication with my committee and I travel to Pittsburgh often. But of course, reality is that I have not gotten much done since our angel arrived and thus I might have to push back my date of completion...sigh. The only tip that I have is what I have been told millions of times - even by my dissertation chair: keep it short and simple (KISS). My research methods involve a lot of qualitative data and I am trying very hard to stay focused. We can always save the rest for future publications, right? :-)

Edited to correct spelling.

HTH a little,
Naty

Naty,

Wow! It sounds like we're in a similar situation in many ways. I also am trying to complete my dissertation long-distance, although I'm farther away from my committee than you are (I live in Kansas now and they're at Arizona State) and unfortunately not in constant contact. I also am using qualitative methods for my dissertation, so I understand how difficult it can be to stay focused and not do too much with the data or continue to want to collect more data. (I'm also struggling because I happen to be much worse at qualitative research than quantitative--I went the qualitative route due to the research questions I was asking.)

If you want to email me directly, maybe we could talk about ways to help encourage each other and keep each other accountable in reaching our goals. I'd be very interested in hearing your specific strategies for trying to work on your dissertation while being a mom. FWIW, here's the link to a question I posted last month soliciting advice: http://www.windsorpeak.com/dcforum/DCForumID30/1545.html

Thanks for your response. It's fun to realize how much we moms on this board have in common.
