We need to replace our goose down duvet, and I just don't know how to pick out a good one. I've looked online and in stores like:

The Company Store
Eddie Bauer
Land's End
Bed, Bath & Beyond

How do I know what to look for? We want to get a good one that will last for a long time, but they range in price from $100-$600. I know we need to get a baffleboxed one, but besides that, how do you pick one out? And how do you know if the $600 one from Eddie Bauer is really better than the $300 one from BB&B? It's so confusing! I am a cold person normally, and like the warmth of the duvet, especially in winter, but like that my current one doesn't make me too overly hot in the summer...or if it does, I just kick my legs out from under it.

I love my goose down duvet that I got a JC Penney's. It was priced at around $300 but since I got it during one of their MANY sales I don't think I paid more than $150. I also got a high loft feather bed at the same time which just feels so wonderful to sleep on. The only problem is finding sheets deep enough, lol. My mom has one from BB&B that she loves. I can't comment on the other stores since I haven't tried them, but I must say I do love department stores since they are always having sales.

You might also try Garnet Hill [www.garnethill.com]. We have been very pleased with their down comforters (especially after this New York winter.
The other one we have is from Lands'End and we are just as happy. Can't remember prices though.

I have always used down comforters from LL Bean and have loved them. We live and Maine and they keep us toasty throughout the winter. Make sure you get one that is sewn into squares so that the down doesn't shift. I can't remember what it is called.....But would highly recommend the LL Bean one. Pricey, but worth it.

Tammy,

A few things that determine the quality of a down comforter are the thread count of the shell (higher t.c. being better), what type of fill (down as opposed to down + feathers), the amount of fill and it's quality (insulating value), and construction. The quality of a comforter from any name brand place (Company Store, Garnet Hill, etc.) is likely to be very good. I really encourage you to look at www.overstock.com though. I've gotten some great deals from them and have always been very pleased with the quality.

Here is a link of the search results for "down comforter":

And here a few links for duvets that I would consider good quality options:

The descriptions of some of these also have an explanations of some of the things you want to look for in a comforter.
