thought this could be interesting. there was a thread for affectionate names for grandparents awhile back, but i am wondering what else is out there besides mommy/daddy, mama/papa. mom/dad. the only one i can think of for dad is abba, which i think is very sweet!

edited to add the grandparents link for those who are curious:

In China it's Mama and Baba. DH received a t-shirt with "baba" on it in Chinese characters for Father's Day this year.

LOok at little Zazi growing up so fast...what an adorable picture in her avatar!!!!-she is precious!!!

We call my father "Papa Ours" daddy bear in French, but grandma insist on being "just" grandma...she says she waited a long time and that is what she wants it to be...we wanted "Mama Ours" but...

In hebrew the name for mommy is 'ima' (abba/ima). Thanks for posting the grandparents link, it's neat to see all the permutations!

In Hungarian it is Apu (daddy) and Anu (mommy pronounced an-yu).

DH's grandfather has been called Apu by every generation now, because DH's mom called him that. So DS has an Apu and Grandma, even though they are his great-grandparents.

Abba and Imma (mom and dad in Hebrew) are my husband's parents, and they are Saba and Savta (grandpa and grandpa in Hebrew) to DS.

My parents are Mama and Papa (in Russian) to me and Bubby and Zaidy (g-ma and g-pa in Yiddish) to DS... have I thoroughly confused everyone?

That's what you get when your families are comprised of Hungarian- and Russian-Jewish immigrants :)
