avatars without a host

I am putting the instructions here again, since the original thread is unreadable now.

To have an avatar without a place to host it, you can host it right here on a post.

First you need a picture to use. It has to be square in shape, not rectangular, so you will need to crop it using some sort of software that probably came with your camera. It's best to just crop out a closeup of baby's face, since the avatar is small.

Your file has to be 50K or less.

Now, reply to a post or start a new post.

Click on the "Click here to choose your file" down at the bottom where it says "Attachment"

Browse to your picture file wherever you stored it on your computer and choose that file.

Select "jpeg picture" and click on Upload.

Click on Post Message.

Now go back and read the message you just posted. You will see an attachment as a link at the bottom. Copy that URL by highlighting it and selecting "Edit" then "Copy" from the menu at the top of your browser. (you can click on the link to see that you got the right picture uploaded if you want to)

Now you want to go update your profile to tell it where to find your avatar. Go back to the main board where it is listing all of the forums, and click on User Menu in that top row. (I'll bet you probably didn't even notice that row up there, I didn't at first)

Over on the left, click on "Edit Your Profile"

Place the cursor in the space that says "Avatar Image" and select "Edit" and Paste" from the menu at the top of your browser to copy the URL into there. (if there was already something there, clear it out first with the delete key)

Click on Update at the bottom of the page.

Now go back and post another reply to your message and see if it worked. If you see just an X where your avatar should be, wait a few minutes and hit reload and see if it shows up. For some reason it takes a few minutes, or maybe more than one post, I don't know which, to show up.

If your avatar looks squished up or funny shaped, it is because your original picture was not square. Go back and crop it again, or find someone who can do this for you if you don't have the software or don't know how.

Just a quick note for those of you testing.... If you don't want to create another post when you are testing, you can just 'Edit' your original post. You don't even need to change anything, just click 'Edit' and then 'Update Message'.

Is that a 3d ultrasound? It looks like the baby is holding one hand over its head and the other down lower. Pretty hard to see, I must say. But WAY COOL. I wonder how well you can see the face on the original? And how much the baby will look like it when it's born!

Yes, it's a 3-d U/S from 23 weeks :) And you interpreted the image exactly right. It is a little easier to make out in the original, but there is some distortion because I have an anterior placenta that was in the way... But thanks for letting me know you can see it!

You're almost there! Try the cut and paste into the profile again, for some reason that is not working. You should see the same thing that you see in your post where it has the name of the attachment, that is what goes in the profile.
