So I have re-discovered knitting after a many years hiatus. I have been going a little crazy Kool-Aid dyeing yarn (I have time to dye ONE more batch of green before going to the grocery store...) and I want to knit Sarah a little cardigan for fall.

Anyone know a good pattern? I am looking for something a little Hanna Andersson-like, if you know what I mean. Stripey and a little funky.

I found this one: http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEsummer03/PATTchildHood.html , but I'm not committed to it yet. :)

Thanks!

Beth, I'm going to e-mail you. My mom teaches knitting and loves to knit kids' sweaters, she probably can point you to a pattern.

If you have a walmart near you in their craft department they have free patterns by the yarn and I know they have some cute cardigans for toddlers...if not they have some really cute books! MY mom crochets and is sooo jealous of some of the knitting patterns they have.

By the way...how do you kool=aid dye yarn? is it permanent? sounds like fun!

Kathryn,

Kool Aid dying is a blast - the colors are so much fun! Here's a link with instructions and sample colors of a bunch of different flavors:

OK Beth, if you love to knit, you HAVE to see these patterns!!!

The book "Fair Isle Sweaters Simplified" is available at Borders, Barnes and Noble, etc. and is definitely "drool-worthy". I'm working on a Rainbows sweater right now for my soon-to-be 3 yr. old DD. It's is just so much fun to make, I hate to finish it!!! :)

BTW, I don't think the Philosophers Wool website does justice to the sweaters. The book is gorgeous beyond words! I frequently pull the book out to drool and dream. Mmmmm....If only I had more hours in my day..... :) These sweaters are so beautiful in person!

Those are beautiful!! I LOVE Tutti Frutti!

But do they sell just patterns and not kits?

Wee Knits
Wee Knits Too

These books have great stripey, funky patterns, but only go up to 24 months, which may be pushing it for Sarah.

I made the Star pattern and it's fabulous!

Yes. The "Fair Isle Sweaters Simplified" is just a pattern book with mostly adult patterns, but some kid sizing and patterns are included. The book offers great information and beautiful, inspirational photos. I would suggest you stop in at a book store and take a look at the book. The patterns are easy to photo copy and the sweaters themselves are pretty straight forward. You knit the sleeves first, then the body of the sweater "in the round" and then sew them together. It goes REALLY fast and it's fun.

I found the book to be the best in terms of teaching some really simple ways to knit and sew together sweaters. I honestly learned more from this book than any other knitting book I own. The techniques are simple simple simple, the directions and illustrations are fabulous and easy to follow. Very slick!

The kits are nice because all the colors and quantities are chosen for you, but with my children I knit using acrylic yarns, sometimes acrylic/wool blends, but not 100% wool. I use the more expensive wool yarns for my own sweaters that I know will get years of use. (also, my little ones suffer from eczema and wearing wool seems to cause major skin irritation)

I hope I answered your questions! :)

Happy knitting!
