I'd like to get my mom a new one, and she'll never figure out how to do the digital thing. I don't have a fortune to spend, but want to get something decent. Which 35mm or APS cameras do you recommend?

All her kids chipped in and got my MIL a digital camera for her birthday this year. I thought it was a terrible idea, didn't think she'd ever get it, etc. Well, I have to say she has surprised me! Get one that has a good interface and one of the Zio gadgets to make uploading super easy and you may be surprised!

But if you want a 35mm, are you wanting a point and shoot or something more elaborate?

The Yashica T4 is a very nice camera and is quite inexpensive. Many "expert" photographers consider it the finest P&S available and also a lot better than many higher end cameras.

We have an Olympus Stylus that we bought many years ago. It takes fine pictures, but if I had known then what I know now, I would have bought the Yashica.

we have the Minolta Freedom Zoom 160. It is easy to use and has some nifty features, like figuring out what your subject is and framing the focus appropriately. If she doesn't need that much zoom, there is also the Freedom Zoom 130. We wanted to be able to take pictures of Jake on the baseball field, so wanted more zoom. It also lets you sit across the room from the baby and get candid shots without being all up in her face.
