What sign do you use when you ask your child if they want to watch a video? The sign for videotape or movie?

Any thoughts on the Yahoo group for "Signing time"? I signed up but I am waiting for approval.
Thanks!

Here's a link to site that shows how to do lots of ASL signs:
http://commtechlab.msu.edu/sites/aslweb/browser.htm

But I actually never bothered to teach Sarah this sign. In general, I teach her signs that I want her to use to communicate her needs. I actually didn't WANT to teach her how to ask for a movie!

I'm on the Yahoo group, but I don't read very often honestly. Its low traffic. I skim it once every couple weeks to see if there is any news about upcoming videos 4,5 and 6. Also they occasionally have playgroups to "meet Alex and Leah". We went to one once and it was fun. Apparently Alex lives near me in Northern VA, and Leah lives in Salt Lake City, so that's where the "playgroups" tend to be.

Hi Beth-
I thought you'd be the first to post!

The only reason that I thought I would teach Julia the "video" sign is that lately she has been wanting to watch her signing video and around the time that we usually watch it, she makes noises, and gets worked up like she is trying to tell me something. At times, it looks like she is trying to sign something but not sure of the word.

Wouldn't this help with her being able to communicate or will it just create more conflict when I say no to her request? I value your opinion especially since Sarah is older and have had more experience with her at this age.

Should I teach her "want" instead?

Thanks!

Well, I just feel like Sarah already probably watches too much TV, and I didn't want her to learn how to ask for it before she could even talk! LOL! :)

But she tells me she wants to watch TV by just pointing at the TV. If I feel like its an OK TV time, I usually ask her what she wants to watch. Interestingly enough, she asks for Signing Time by doing either the sign for "signing" (like Rachel Coleman does in the opening song) or by signing "Leah". Its actually pretty cute. But I didn't teach her either one, she picked it up from the videos. Although I do (attempt to) sign along with the opening song, so she has watched me do that several hundred times! LOL!!! :)

Beth-
I think I'll borrow Sarah's idea of using the sign for "signing" to watch these videos. That way Julia is only learning how to ask for these videos and not TV in general.
Thanks for replying.

Oh wow! Colin would love to meet Alex and Leah! I think that might even be better than meeting Elmo! Can you post the link to the Yahoo group again? I know you did it before, but I don't remember where.

Before he was talking, Colin would walk over and pat the TV when he wanted to watch "signing time." Now he does this and says "dah dah dah." I think it's funny that "signing time" was one of his first words -before Mama, even!
