avatars without a host

I'm posting the instructions again, since the old thread is so long again.


I am putting the instructions here again, since the original thread is unreadable now.

To have an avatar without a place to host it, you can host it right here on a post.

First you need a picture to use. It has to be square in shape, not rectangular, so you will need to crop it using some sort of software that probably came with your camera. It's best to just crop out a closeup of baby's face, since the avatar is small.

Your file has to be 50K or less.

Now, reply to a post or start a new post.

Click on the "Click here to choose your attachments" down at the bottom where it says "Attachment"

Browse to your picture file wherever you stored it on your computer and choose that file.

Select "jpeg picture" and click on Upload.

Click on Post Message.

Now go back and read the message you just posted. You will see an attachment as a link at the bottom. Copy that URL by highlighting it and selecting "Edit" then "Copy" from the menu at the top of your browser. (you can click on the link to see that you got the right picture uploaded if you want to)

Now you want to go update your profile to tell it where to find your avatar. Go back to the main board where it is listing all of the forums, and click on User Menu in that top row. (I'll bet you probably didn't even notice that row up there, I didn't at first)

Over on the left, click on "Edit Your Profile"

Place the cursor in the space that says "Avatar Image" and select "Edit" and Paste" from the menu at the top of your browser to copy the URL into there. (if there was already something there, clear it out first with the delete key)

Click on Update at the bottom of the page.

Now go back and post another reply to your message and see if it worked. If you see just an X where your avatar should be, wait a few minutes and hit reload and see if it shows up. For some reason it takes a few minutes, or maybe more than one post, I don't know which, to show up.

If your avatar looks squished up or funny shaped, it is because your original picture was not square. Go back and crop it again, or find someone who can do this for you if you don't have the software or don't know how.

Edited to read: Yay! I sort of got it to work, but I think I used too small of a picture file (8 kb) because the definition is pretty poor. Oh well, at least I'm not avatar-less anymore! I feel validated...

I think you need to clear out what is in the avatar field before you put in the new one. For some reason it has the names of two pics all run together in there.

Thank you for posting this helpful info . . . I was wondering if you could start the thread over again, though, and let this one die. It's really long, takes forever and a day to load, and takes up half the space on the first page of the Lounge, bumping other threads to later pages. I know I'm new, and I don't want to be demanding, but I've been frustrated the past few days trying to visit the Lounge and having to scroll wayyyyy down with my wimpy laptop trackpoint mouse to see any other threads.

If you click on "collapse topics" near the top of the page, you will see just the subject of each one instead of all the replies etc.

I will start a new thread and hopefully they can pin the new one and let the old one die out.

PLEASE DON'T ADD TO THIS THREAD BY REPLYING. It is getting so long that it is messing up the display for people who read the board a certain way. Just attach your picture to the next post you make in response to something. There is no need to have a separate post just for your avatar, it will work on any post in any thread.
