A question about credit reports and scores

Following Flagger's post.... I was wondering. Last year we ran our reports and didn't find any errors, but on my report there were several credit accounts (from my very stupid youth!) that I paid off and closed. They show that they are inactive. Can you get accounts like this off of your report? I think they are tugging my score down.

They can be removed 7 years after the last activity date. (they may drop off automatically)

I think that for some purposes they stay on for 11 years, it used to be for a mortgage they went further back, but I don't know if that is still the same.
