Is it possible that it goes away and comes back? Sophie has been off Zantac for months now, but all of a sudden she's waking up at night all over again - burping A LOT.

I also sometimes hear her urp something up but swallow it again.

HELP! She was up three times last night. Teething, reflux or maybe both?

You should talk to Rachel about this. I know she had to restart Abby on medicine... and I think Elizabeth did too for James.

Our ped said her reflux should go away when she is between 6-12 months old. And she's not getting better. Just last week, we had a bizarre out of routine morning and DH forgot to give her Prevacid. Yowza! She had a really rough morning... lots of tummy pain until he figured out he had forgotten her meds. I'm starting to not believe that they really get over this.

Also, if you do take her to your ped... you might want to see if your ped recommends stuff other than Zantac. I know mine will do Prevacid and one other. His own little girl had reflux as a baby, and he knows how hard it is to get your baby to take something that tastes as awful as Zantac! Just a thought.

ETA: Sophie's new avatar is so adorable!

Yes, definitely! James was off of Zantac for months starting at about 5.5 months. He would wake about once a night to feed and then go right back to sleep. Starting about 9 months he woke several times a night. He'd nurse and go back down and fall asleep easily (not while nursing but after getting back in the crib) but wake up again within a couple of hours. I thought he was just in the habit of nursing at night when he woke, so at 13 months I cut out night nursings. When he was still waking up several times a night and screaming a month later, I decided something else was wrong. He would sometimes make loud swallowing noises, and sometimes he would be curled up in bed like he wanted to sleep but couldn't (as opposed to standing at the crib rail clearly wanting out). We put him on Zantac again, and he started sleeping through the night within a couple of days. We have had some other sleep disturbances since then with moving, teething, being cold, and who knows what else, but I am convinced that the Zantac definitely did help him. I'm scared to take him off it again, but we will try again before his 18-month well check, and if he gets worse again, the ped will send us to a GI specialist for evaluation.

Also, teething can aggravate reflux, so the two are interrelated.

HTH.

Thanks Elizabeth-

I will keep a closer eye on Sophie tonight to see if it really seems like reflux or not.

I've just noticed lately that she's burping a lot - stinky ones too.

Chiming in late, but the same thing did happen with Abigail. In her case, six weeks of Nexium was what it took to get things under control again. Not fun. But I have definitely noticed that when she's teething, her reflux gets aggravated.
