Dori, I don't know the answer to this, but I do know there is a thread about this in Around The House and it links to other threads re: 1st birthday suggestions. I was just perusing it myself for ideas for DS's upcoming birthday. Good luck!

I hear those Kettler Trikes are quite fabulous. But check 'Around the House' forum for many more suggestions.

You will find lots of helpful information in the Around the House threads. If you are looking for "big" first birthday gifts like DS's grandparents were, these made the short list:

Little Tikes Deluxe Cozy Convertible (a big hit :))
PBK Anywhere Chair (this is great!)
Sand & Water Table (DS loves this - I think I like the one by Berchet better than the one by Little Tikes)
Brio Billy Blue's Train Set (DS likes it, but couldn't really use it until 18 months)
PBK Plush Rocking Horse (DS really likes this - waited until 16 months at Christmas and he could ride it right away)
Radio Flyer Wagon (didn't get yet)
Kettler Tricycle (decided to wait)
Table & Chairs Set (DS didn't seem ready)

Also, in general, I think board books and any kind of ball would be huge hits. Or, a ride-on toy like the Chicco Play and Ride Train or Radio Flyer Classic Tiny Trike would be good.

FWIW...

PBK anywhere chairs are currently on sale for $99.

Also, the PBK rocking horse went on a huge sale last year after xmas 2002. By March it was down over 70%. They weren't on the floor in the store where I worked, but in a back room, so its worth it to ask for it incase there are any left.

At one my son's favorite toy was this Fisher Price Push Truck. He wasn't walking yet, but he could walk with it. It was a gift and I was sort of unimpressed with it...what did I know?! It's a favorite still over a year later. Any type of push/walker would be a favorite if you are looking for a different style. He also has the Little Tikes scooter with a handle on the back that he used in a similiar way.

Here's the scooter:

I had another thought. A climber of some sort would also be a great gift. We got DS the Little Tikes 8-in-1 Adjustable Playground for his 1st birthday and he loves it! He was a little too short to climb up on it at first so we put a little stool at the bridge part and he climbed up with ease. It has room to grow. I think he'll use it for many years. There are other smaller options that would be good too. I would just avoid the super small ones, unless they are for indoor use because they'll be outgrown quickly.

Here are some options:

Can I ask you why you like the Berchet water table better than the Little Tikes one? We were going to purchase the LT one at Wal-Mart for 49.99 but I never really considered any other one....

Thanks!

I would second the Little Tikes Cozy Coupe Convertable. We bought this for DS for his first birthday and he LOVES it! I am amazed at how much use we get out of it and it can grow with him. Right now it has a floor board so we can push him around but when he gets older the floor board comes out so he can drive himself. This is the best toy investment we have made so far and we have made plenty :)!

Here's a link to a discussion on the Toddler Board about sand and water tables that provides the pros and cons of the LT table.
