Kraft cheese - use it within 5 days of opening?

i just read this on two packages of kraft cheese (cheddar). i have NEVER done this. in fact, we have a package in there that's been there for probably a month that we've been using (shredded). crap!

does everyone use their cheese like this within 5 days of opening? is this a known fact?

I will use/eat cheese until it has mold! Most of the time, its eaten way before that but still, 5 days?? No way!

What's that about?? We have cheese forever...Like Daniella said, until there's mold on it! What about those 2 lb bags from BJs? It took us forever to finish it!

I do the same as the others. I use cheese until it goes moldy.

Really? I have never seen that.. it must be something new. The last couple of months, I have just been buying the block of cheese and grating how much ever we need right then and there. The rest goes in an air-tight ziploc. I find it is much cheaper to do this than buying the pre-grated one. Plus, you can grate it as fine as you want.

I will eat it if it is before (or not much after!!) the expiration date and there is no mold!

Since it says it, I do it. I remember being really surprised when I read it on the package. I've often wondered about it. Since I thought that cheese was good until moldy. I figured it had to do with the processing since it's shredded?

I usually freeze the cheese, break off what I think I need if it's frozen together and then put the rest back in the freezer. If I have left overs, I use within 5 days. But I'm a real freak when it comes to "old" food. I also only keep left-overs for 3 days in the fridge, then it gets thrown out.

Jeannie that is so funny about you and "old" food. I do the same thing. I throw away half and half when it is 5 or 6 days old no matter what. I throw away shredded cheese if it smells funny, not going by the mold factor at all. I do the same thing with leftovers at 3 days! A girl after my own heart....LOL.

I have never frozen cheese though so I might have to just give that a try!

I buy the huge packages of shredded cheese at Costco and freeze small bags of it. I definitely do not use the bags within 5 days of opening though.
