Page numbers - Did I change a setting, or did something change?

I've been away for nearly two weeks, and now many of the threads I click on are split into multiple pages. Is this a change to the site, or did I inadvertently change a user setting when I was trying to figure out avatar posting?

I think that theads are split into multiple pages when there are many replies. HTH
