Lauren is still hospitalized and will be for a while yet, but I thought I'd post an update. She had a hard day today. The vein with her IV in it burst, and it caused some painful swelling before anyone figured out what was going on. Then it took numerous tries to get another line started. Tammy just spoke with the infectious disease specialist, and they're still uncertain exactly what is causing Lauren's infection, although they're leaning toward joint septic arthritis. They are recommending two weeks of antibiotics by IV, some of which may be able to happen at home. They'll be inserting a PIC line soon, which will increase Lauren's mobility quite a bit and which will enable her to receive IVs at home without having to worry about her veins rupturing.

Tammy and Evan are very appreciative of everyone's continued prayers and good wishes.

Thanks for keeping us posted. I am not sure if joint septic arthritis is treated by a rheumatolgist but if it is and they want to call and consult with someone - I was treated by the best(not just saying it- he is known worldwide) rheumatoogist in the conutry. He is up in Boston but I am sure they could call if need be. Le me know if they want his name.

I remember when Laura (my own DD, not to be confused with Lauren) had her surgery and they had so much trouble putting IVs in because her little veins couldn't handle it...the one vein in her left arm "blew" and her hand and forearm arm swelled up and she looked like Popeye. She needed multiple IVs and PIC lines because they just couldn't stay in for very long. I empathize with Tammy and Evan, because I know how dreadful this whole IV business is for li'l peanuts.

Thanks, everyone. Lots of people have asked what they can do to help, and at the moment, I think their needs are covered. Would you like to send cards? If you would, please email me and I will give you my husband's business address. You can send them there and we will forward them to Tammy.

I was (along with others I see) wondering if there's anything they need. I don't live near there, but would be more than happy to drop something in the mail or do something from my remote location! Please let them know that I continue to pray that Lauren is on the road to recovery soon. That poor little tyke! I imagine this is a very upsetting, scary time for all of them.

Omg I missed a post, I haven't been here much. Poor baby I will keep Lauren and her parents in my prayers!! I hope she feels better soon and they can cure this infection quickly with minimal pain and discomfort for her.
