Dumb Newbie Question About Co-Ops

And my dumb newbie question is...


...What's a Co-Op??? How does it work? Do you get some kind of group discount by joining one? Are you obligated in any manner -- e.g. do you pay a membership fee?

Sorry in advance for the cluelessness! I've seen several threads on different boards about co-ops, and I don't want to miss out on anything.

Let's say you want the super duper diaper bag but it is expensive.
Someone might call a store and ask for discout. The store or cyber-store will offer a discount to say BBBs if 20 orders are placed.

So you are getting a good deal b/c the seller is getting a big order.
