to eat it,does not point and wave bye bye.He only says one word dada and seems to use it for most adults in his life.I have asked him to give me the ball and he is either not understanding or does not want to do it.
Most of the time he wil not hold his bottle and rejects a sippy cup altogether.
He is very fond of the Leapfrog table and plays with it for 10 minutes at a time.
I do not want to say anything to the parents if this is not problematic.
Their doctor does not seem to ask too many questions. i dont know if she is remiss or just not concerned.

I don't know if you should be concerned or not. I wondered when I read your post if he would pick up the cheerios or hold the bottle if he was really hungry. Is this a choice he is making? Given the choice my 5 year old ds would have me pick up the cheerios!

I dont know if it is a choice or of he simply can not do it.
I think that is why I was concerned about cognitive delays.

How is he doing on his other milestones? Crawling, standing, walking, babbling, etc. If he is babbling, you should look for him to say 5 words at 18 months. It doesn't seem like much, but the peds in my group say that is a pretty good bottom end # for actual speech. As for the fine motor skills(cheerios and bottle holding), I'd be concerned if he wasn't hitting his other large motor milestones like crawling or pulling up. I'd watch a bit longer and then I might throw in my 2 cents! HTH!

I would say...No. None of those things sound like real problems to me. One of my playgroup friends says that now that has weaned from BFing, her 17-month-old daughter will not hold her own bottle; only her mom/dad/grandma can do it. It's not that she's incapable of doing it, she just doesn't want to. They're so little at 1-year, I don't think it's a problem if they want that extra love and attention from having an adult hold the bottle for them. My 20-month-old only started waving bye-bye at around 14-15-months and he still does not point. My niece, who is the same age as my son, only said "mama" when she started to speak and also used it to refer to any adult in the room. Neither my son or my niece are developmentally delayed; babies develop at their own pace.

Thank you all so much!!!!!!!
He is commando crawling and can pull himself up and get down.
I am going to go to his one year checkup but I am going to listen not talk.
Is anyone familiar with the Denver Pediatric development questionnaire or the Early language milestones test.
Both are mentioned in the Burton White books.
I would love to get a hold of a test.
Thanks again!

I'm not sure where you can get a copy of those tests, but you can definitely get more information about those tests if you enter eitehr Denver Pediatric Development Questionnaire or the Early Language Milestone Test at ask.rc.com (basically like google). If you're really concerned, or just curious, you could ask the pediatrician about them. I know you don't want to bring it up at his checkup, so perhaps you could talk to the pediatrician privately, or ask it more of a curiosity question, so it doesn't seem like you're trying to say there's something wrong with your grandson? Or perhaps you could frame it as something you've noticed in another child you've seen at day care, or something like that and you were curious about these tests? Hmm...I think I'm just babbling now. Anyway, maybe some of the hits you get on ask.rc.com could give you some ideas.

Good luck!
