View Full Version : Is there a better 80's movie than 16 Candles?

MartiesMom2B

I think not! Last night it was on AMC and I was glued the whole time. I'm sad by the amount of editing. Those lines are such classics! John Hughes what a genious. Come on "No more yankee my wankee - the Donger needs food" I'm surprised this movie didn't get an Oscar. This is definitely one of those movies that comes on and I just have to watch - what about you?

I'm a sucker for these movies! I love Some Kind of Wonderful which I somehow missed as a child. Watts (Mary Stuart Masterson) was too cool and Keith (Eric Stoltz)....Yumm.

And who didn't love Molly Ringwald? I also LOVE the Breakfast Club. I could watch it a thousand times.

I'm sorry, I have to disagree. Ferris Bueller's Day Off is the BEST 80's teen movie. I still think of Matthew Broderick as Ferris when I see him!

That movie came out the summer before my last year of high school so I completely related to it.

OK, I love 16 Candles but, IMHO the best 80's movie is The Outsiders.

C. Thomas Howell,Matt Dillon,Ralph Macchio,Patrick Swayze,Rob Lowe,Emilio Estevez,Tom Cruise,Diane Lane and Leif Garrett. How could you not love a movie with that cast? And Frances Ford Coppola directing. Loved it!!!!

It's one of my all time faves. And you've already quoted THE best line. When all my friends got engaged - we were getting marr-reed, yeah, marr-reed. And very un-PC of me - tan trousers, a red argyle sweater, and red shoes. No he's nnot retarded.

Shall I admit I like Dirty Dancing too :) And when my friends and I did something stupid - well, we carried a water mellon.

This was my all time favorite movie. I used to know it word for word. Just genius. Dh and I were watching it last night also. Aah, Jake Ryan. What I would have given to be with Jake Ryan back then!

Ferris Bueller was on last night too. Another good one!

My other all time favorite was Some Kind Of Wonderful. Was that still the 80's? Eric Stoltz...man, I loved him. I STILL drool over him when I see him. I gotta go buy that movie NOW. I don't know what happened to my copy. Wow...I'm flashing back here!

What about "Say Anything"??? I was so in love with John Cusack when I saw that movie. My favorite line: "What I want to be, what I want to do with my life, is be with your daughter - I'm good at it."

No, he's not gay. At least I'm pretty sure he's not I saw him ina where is he now show and he left show business to raise his family. I think he's in the lumber business now or he makes furniture. Uhm - it's something to do with wood.

OK- if you love Jake Ryan you have to read the Washington Post article that's linked to the second link that Anna posted. Too bad I already have a nephew named Jacob, b/c a little Jacob Ryan would be a great name for a little boy. You know you want a little Jake Ryan of your own.

If we're just talking teen movies, then Sixteen Candles is definitely my fave. Also love all of the others mentioned here. I think I spent too much time watching HBO though...anyone remember Just One of the Guys and Can't Buy Me Love? Classics!

Also, I think one of my favorite lines is from Heathers. "I love my dead gay son." Dark movie but makes me laugh.

Now I know some of you have not paid your two dollars and can't believe your grandmothers actually felt you up, but I have to say the best two 80's movies are Can't Buy Me Love and Revenge of the Nerds with a pre-Goose and Dr. Green Anthony Edwards.

I don't even know how to respond to this thread, I have tears in my eyes from laughter (and maybe a little crying).
But, Just One of the Guys has got to be the BEST reference that I have gotten out it. I thought I was the only one who has seen that movie over and over again.
Ugh, good times. I just am at a loss for words.
The 80's rule. Even if that statement makes me a gaywad.
No one mentioned One Crazy Summer? About Last Night? St. Elmo's Fire? Valley Girl? Fast Times at Ridgemont High?
I cant keep thinking about these movies, I have to go to work in the morning, and I am far behind as it is. If I keep this up, all I will do is think of 80's movies to mention in this post.
Have a good night!

Ahhh...Jake Ryan. Yum. I wish he had brought me a birthday cake on my 16th birthday. I would have loved to spend it with him. This was the first movie I watched with the babysitter! LOL. My parents had gone out and she let my sister and I watch it. I believe it was on HBO. Made my Dad not so happy. It is still one of my favorite movies.

I also love Say Anything (I wanted to marry Lloyd), Ferris Bueller, St. Elmo's Fire, Can't Buy Me Love, but no one mentioned....HEATHERS! I know it was late 80's (but I wasn't a teenager until 1988 anyway!)I LOVE that movie.

Some favorite lines...

"What's your damage Heather?"
"Corn Nuts"
"This isn't just a spoke in my menstrual cycle"
"I love my dead gay son"

The best line in 16 Candles is when Molly Ringwald says, "I LOATHE THE BUS!" LOL!

ETA: Another classic 80s movie is "The Sure Thing" with John Cusack (directed by Rob Reiner). A lot of now-famous actors are in it, like Tim Robbins and Anthony Edwards! It's awesome! My whole family loves it, especially my mom!

Just One of the Guys! OMG I completely forgot about that movie.

Now I must say that I haven't seen a lot of these films (please don't shoot me but I don't think I've ever seen Can't Buy Me Love and didn't see Better Off Dead until I was in college). I was surrounded by men in my family and had to be subjected to Big Trouble in Little China and Caddy Shack and other Rodney Dangerfield movies like Easy Money.

Flagger,

I was just about to post about Pretty in Pink! Love it when Ducky dances to Try a Little Tenderness. I get so heartbroken for Ducky when Blaine shows up for his date with Andy.

Well, it doesn't really count as an 80's movie, although it came out in the 80's, but I absolutely love Princess Bride. Some 17 years later I still use lines from that movie in everyday speech. For example "It's possible.." I usually add "pig" in my head. As for the "real" 80's movies Breakfast Club is the one I can watch everytime it comes on TV followed by 16 Candles.

Well IMO, the '80's movie trifecta is this:

16 Candles ("Whassa Happenin, Hotstuff.")
Breakfast Club ("Where's your lunch?" "You're wearing it.")
Valley Girl ("What are you doing here?" "I forgot my comb.")

Ooh, the '80's ROCKED!

I confess that when we came up with the name together, I kept asking him, "Where have I heard Jake Ryan before?" I must have asked him 10 times, but he never nailed it. That's 'cause he was never a 16 Candles fan. When I made him watch it, he asked me if that's who are son was named after! I had to admit that although I had a humongous crush, I didn't recall where I'd heard the name until we rewatched, so no, he wasn't technically named for him. But what better guy to name him after, right?! Anyway, I love the name and it fits my little guy perfectly!

Hi - I am late to the convo and was scrolling the postings waiting for a mention of my alltime fave - The Sure Thing! That is when I began my love affair with John Cusack! What a classic. Some great lines off the top of my head:

Spontaneity has its time and place.
We speak each other's unspoken language.
I'm speaking to you cordless.
Come to papa boys!
Who made liquid soap and why?
Well maybe one will come up.

Also love Better off Dead and all of JC's 80's work! But once, when I was watching Better Off with my parents, my mom turned to me and said "why won't they give that boy 2 dollars?" Why indeed?

ROFLMAO!!!!!

Read through ALL the posts and all my faves were listed too.
I don't think I could order them, but Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink (still listen to that soundtrack!!!), Heathers, Say Anything, Can't Buy Me Love, Dirty Dancing, Dead Poets Society and The Sure Thing defined my teenage years. "In Your Eyes" is one of my most influential songs.

I'd have to list Goonies as my ultimate pre-teen movie and When Harry Met Sally as my ultimate post-teen movie. I've got the entire script of WHMS memorized. Go ahead, quiz me. I watch it every New Years and at least once or twice in between.

For other 80s movies not mentioned, anyone seen Gotcha! another pre-ER Anthony Edwards movie?

Or for really obscure movies, American Dreamer? With JoBeth Williams -- I LOVE this movie.
