I was listening to music in the car today, and I started thinking about what I considered some of the BEST ALBUMS OF ALL TIME. So what are your favorites?

Here are mine:
1. Weezer - the blue album
2. Radiohead - the Bends
3. U2 - Joshua Tree
4. Pedro the Lion - It's Hard to Find a Friend
5. Soundtrack from The Sound of Music

Mariana,

I love questions like this (it's like being a character in High Fidelity, IYKWIM?). The best albums of all time, IMHO:

1. Songs in the Key of Life by Stevie Wonder
2. Teenager of the Year by Frank Black
3. Broken English by Marianne Faithfull
4. Nighthawks at the Diner by Tom Waits
5. The Royal Scam by Steely Dan

ETA: I love "Shoot Out the Lights" by Richard and Linda Thompson, everything by the Pixies and XTC.

The one I'm listening to currently is "Un Dia Normal" by Juanes. Every song is great! Love it.

"Swamp Ophelia" by the Indigo Girls would rank in the top 3 of any of my best albums lists. I'm more of a fan of Emily's songs than Amy's, but their music complements each other so nicely that I will sit through Amy's rockin' to get back to folksy Emily.

"Our Time in Eden" by 10,000 Maniacs is also in the top 3. I used to say that that album changed my life, but now that a baby has REALLY changed my life...I'm not sure that was entirely accurate.

Tori Amos "Little Earthquakes" has been a good friend to me as has her album "Under the Pink".

"Urban Hang Suite" by Maxwell takes me right back to a really good time in my life. So does "Donde Jugaran Los Ninos" by Mana.

Simon & Garfunkel "Greatest Hits" is somewhere on the list.

I love The Cure, but it's hard to choose just one of their albums....hmmh? maybe "Kiss me, Kiss me, Kiss me". Another great release from 1987 is "Substance" by New Order

For poppy fun party music, gotta love Janet Jackson's "Design of a Decade" or JJ's "Velvet Rope" and Selena's "Amor Prohibido" or "Selena Live".

"Vs." by Pearl Jam makes the list too.

For a quick pick me up, the soundtrack to the musical "Rent" will do it for me everytime!

That's all I can think of for now. Great thread...thanks for starting it!

My choice is definitely never going to be the critic's choice...

I am obsessed with ABBA and love every single song they recorded. I know they are no Mozart or Pink Floyd (as DH points out), but I think it is just me rebelling after being forced to only play classical music on the piano growing up!

But Mariana has a great choice with the Sounds of Music - who ever can get tired of that album.

What a great topic! Definitely showing my age, but here are some of my favorites:

Paul Simon, Graceland

The Police, Outlandos D'Amour

The Clash, London Calling

Bruce Springsteen, Born to Run (beating out Born in the USA just by virtue of my mood at the moment)

Talking Heads, Little Creatures *and* Stop Making Sense

U2, War

Violent Femmes, Violent Femmes

My hands-down favorite kid album ever: Carole King, Really Rosie

I think we would get along very well on a long car ride! Swamp Ophelia, Our Time in Eden, Little Earthquakes, and Simon and Garfunkel Greatest Hits are all definitely in my top 10. And although they're not as high on my list, I love The Cure (especially "Just Like Heaven") and New Order. We must be around the same age; all of those albums are my college memories.

I would also add the "Indigo Girls" self-titled album, The Joshua Tree, and my Springsteen Greatest Hits album.

The Indigo Girls self-titled album is one of the greatest albums ever. And they are transcendental in concert!

Jill,

I honestly don't know much about Richard and Linda Thompson, but I have a CD by Teddy Thompson, whom I believe is their son, and I really like it. There are a couple songs I don't love, but overall I really like it. I don't think it made a huge splash when it came out, but I thought you might be interested...

Thanks, Deborah! I may buy that for DH for Christmas!

If you get a chance, check out the Richard/Linda Thompson album (it is one of the best albums ever, I swear--it is absolutely amazing!). As my sister and I always say, "don't ask questions, just go out and buy it!"

Ah, yes....NIN "Pretty Hate Machine" is a great album. Takes me right back to my first year in college.
And I listened to Bob Marley "Legend" probably 10,000 times my senior year in high school. Good times, good times.
