Any Vegetarians out there? I'm looking for some ideas for Thanksgiving. I usually make a mock meatloaf and and serve it with all the traditional side dishes, but I'd like to try something different this year. What are you planning to make???

My Vegetarian friend eats something called Tofurkey. I'm not vegetarian, so don't know much about it, but she says it's not bad...

I was going to suggest this too. I've seen them shaped like turkeys with little drumsticks and everything. Never tried it though, so I don't know what it tastes like.

A friend of mine makes like a bean meatloaf in a turkey shaped cake pan, it's really cute!

We'll probably be doing a veggie thanksgiving. I'm not tied to traditional thanksgiving food, so I've considered 2 options:
1) all side dishes - something like...green bean cassarole, garlic mashed potatoes, butternut squash soup, yummy salad, rissotto, pumpkin pie
OR
2) a cheese lasagna dinner with a big salad, garlic bread, and pumpkin pie.

Option 2 is much less labor intensive, so I'm leaning toward that one.

I've tried Tofurkey (mediocre) and nutloaf (sometimes good--depends on the recipe). Last year my main dish for the vegetarians at our dinner was Seitan Marsala. I'll definitely make it again this year--it was easy and delicious.

I sauteed about 8 oz of mushrooms in a mixture of olive oil and butter (can just do olive oil if you are vegan), added in rosemary, a little salt and pepper, and 1 lb of seitan cut into chunks (along with the liquid from the package--this is important), sauteed for a minute and then added in some marsala wine, and cooked everything long enough to burn off the alcohol, thicken the sauce, and heat through the seitan (maybe ten minutes?).

It is almost impossible to mess this up. I've made it several times since last thanksgiving and never used any particular measurements--just whatever looked right and tasted right. If you don't care for rosemary it would probably be just as good with another mixture of herbs.

It goes well with the traditional side dishes, and even my picky toddler eats it!

I have a dairy oyster soup that I make...
Some vegetarians would avoid due to the oysters, some would avoid due to the dairy...but I have met vegetarians who would eat it since oyster...

Anyway if interested let me know...
It is our tradition but it would depend on diet if it would interest you...

We made an all veggie T-day meal one year. It was straight out of Vegetarian Times magazine and it was delicious.

Main dish was a lentil loaf.

I think Gourmet had a big article on vegetarian Thanksgiving options. It was either Gourmet or Cooking Light, but I'm pretty sure it was Gourmet. I'll check during naptime...

Thanks Neve - we just don't eat poultry, beef, or pork. I guess we are not real vegetarians since we still eat seafood on occasion. Your suggestion sounds interesting, but I'm not a fan of oysters. Thanks anyway!!

I had Tofurkey last year and is was really gross. I love all of the faux meat things, but I really hated Tofurkey. I like the idea of some kind of veggie meatloaf.

Since I'm the only vegetarian in my family, everyone else is having the traditional thanksgiving meal and I'm having eggplant parmesan which is my absolute favorite! I'll also have some of the side dishes from the traditional dinner.
