I know that these are not all the possibilities and please don't be offended if I didn't describe your situation - I only had a certain # of questions.

I am just curious to see what our schedules and child-care needs are.

And comments are encouraged!

I voted in the WAHM category, flexible hours, but really... I almost never describe myself that way. Some months I work and some months I don't, so that may be why.

I voted SAHM, though I do work about 6 shifts (8 and 12 hours) per month at the hospital (DH watches DS during those shifts). Keeps me up-to-date and lets me get some "adult" time.

I voted SAHM, but I work 13 hours from home per week and 3 teaching at the local community college. I'm a mixed category. :)

I voted for part time-- I work traditional office hours ("8-5"), but I only work 4 days a week right now.

I chose "work outside of the home full time with flexible hours," but I don't think that adequately describes my situation (I may have chosen incorrectly!). I am a tenure-track professor and work full time, but I do a lot of my prep work at home and after Ellie has gone to sleep (7 pm-?). I also work almost every weekend and I work on holidays and breaks.

As DH said the other day, this job is perfectly suited to my personality. I am not a procrastinator (uh, except with grading sometimes, blech!) and am self-motivated enough to conduct research, write articles, etc., without an iron-clad deadline looming over me (once upon a time, I did write a way-too-long dissertation, which gave me a lot of practice doing this, LOL!). I am definitely not an 8-5 person.

That said, it can be frustrating b/c some people don't think I really work--I really do work and work hard, but not a lot of people see it since my hours are precarious.

I chose WAHM PT but in reality work 3 8-hr days a week - two at home and one in the office. DH or my mom watches Colin while I am working.

I'm probably guilty of this thinking too. One of the moms in my playgroup is also a professor. She teaches 2 classes, plus office hours and research, etc. Since she has the flexibility to be home on certain days and she has so many of the same issues that the rest of us (mostly SAHMs) have, it's hard for me to remember sometimes that she works full time!

I chose "work outside the home with traditional office hours (ie 8-5)." My mom watches DS every day, which gives me the piece of mind to go off to work. :-)

I'm a full-time law student. These days, I'm gone from 8 am till midnight. Finals coming up. Usually, my hours are like usual office hours, 8-5

I work outside the home with mostly traditional office hours. I work in the investment banking arena & typically those hours are very long but I had to cut back when DS was born (more like wanted to & this was the perfect reason) so I leave everyday around 4pm - 4:30 to pick him up from "school" unless my DH leaves his office first in which case he'll pick him up & we have our dinner/evening walk together before bedtime. Most mornings I'm in by 7:30am - 8am but that is more of a commute thing, if I left any later I wouldn't get in until 8:30am or later.

So instead of working 12+ hour days I work 9 hour days (technically I should get an hour lunch break but I rarely take it!)

Interesting. I voted on what I am currently- a SAHM. I will soon be a PT WAHM, and am hoping to do most of my work once I get the kids to bed. DH works second shift, so I can get some done if he isn't working or sleeping in the AM (overtime schedule for him will be what messes with this). When they go to bed (between 7 and 8) I can get back to work.

I formally worked pt out of the house, and pt from home. My work at home was done while my child would be sleeping. The occasions when it had to be done during the day, I needed to make arrangements for her. It was too distracting for me otherwise, especially during business calls. That is the one concern I have with my new situation also- the phone.

I voted SAHM....which is correct for most of the time. Although I do alot of volunteer work outside the home several months before an election. So now I have a couple of years off again!!!

I'm a reading specialist, and teach PT at an elementary school. I work from 7:30-11:30 each weekday in a job-sharing arrangement. I taught full-time until DD was born, and I will probably return to full-time teaching when my children are in school. I hope/plan to continue PT as long as my school system will agree to it!

I'm a student. That doesn't really fit into any of the options. I also have a part time job, but it's probably just for the holidays.

Matt's in daycare M-F from 8-4. Those are basically dh's work hours. If I have school or work not in those hours, dh takes care of Matt.

I chose SAHM, because that's how I think of myself these days, but I am doing some outside work as well. I recently started picking up some grantwriting gigs for some non-profits, and also am coordinating a statewide Women's Summit on Health and Economic issues scheduled for next November.

DS goes to daycare 2 days a week, but DD is home with me all the time. I plan to start her in daycare for at least a few hours a week after her first birthday as the Summit will be taking more and more of my time.

I voted I work outside the home with traditional office hours, but I almost never work 8-5. I'm an attorney, so I almost never leave before 7 pm, and it isn't uncommon for me to work until 1 or 2 am, or pull the occasional all-nighter. In the last month of each quarter, I rarely leave before 10 or 11 pm. DH is a SAHD, so I don't have to worry about third-party child-care. I generally come in to work later (around 10 am) when I'm very busy or working late nights so that I can spend time with C in the morning.

I am currently working from home full-time AND caring for Ava. It's tough -- while I love being with her all day, my work is certainly not at the level of quality it would be if I didn't have to take care of her at the same time.

In a few months, I am going to switch to working in the office full-time, but most likely with flexible hours -- 7-3 or something similar.

I just went back to work today from maternity leave. I answered PT work outside the home. I work 3 days/wk and it is so great (at least after today!). I didn't even cry today unlike when I returned after having DD when I cried all week (I was FT then).

I voted FT, unusual shifts... I am currently at home, but I start my tenure track pediatric professor job in two weeks. I was a neonatology fellow when DS was born, and worked wacky hours, 24 hr shifts, overnights, then a few weeks of research time, which I interpreted as 10-5, LOL. I only got 6 weeks of maternity leave :( Now, I'll work reg hrs most of the year, with three hard months of hospital patient care with long hours, and occaisonal overnight call interspersed into the easy time. DH has been a SAHD, He is going to start looking for a job soon, he's a surgeon, but took a year and half off to be with DS and get some downtime. I need to start looking at DC!

Ahhh! Someone who knows what it is like! I am a WAHM with a crazy job, that is hard to juggle. Now that DD is 14 months, I may re-think this and do something that makes more sense.

I picked "work out of home part-time". In reality at the moment I have 3 different part time jobs so I am really working outside of the home 37 hours per week PLUS prep time at home for the 4 community college classes I am teaching, plus commute time between 2 different colleges. So at the moment I am really working full-time, but only for 2 more weeks! Then I will not be teaching next semester and I will be down to 1 part time job, being an academic advisor at one of the community colleges I have taught at (I'm doing this now on the days I don't teach). I will be working 20 hours per week, 8:30-2 Tue-Fri (with half hour for lunch) on a regular basis, plus sometimes extra during busy weeks.

i am 100% SAHM, but i also part time as a WAHM with my own business. (lizajane baby) but since it is my business, i sew when i have the time or when i feel like it. i don't have hours or real deadlines. just deadlines to get stuff to folks in a reasonable amount of time. (less resonable lately with this whole 8 months pregnant with a toddler who won't sleep thing...)

Oops! I checked off SAHM but really I work outside the home PT! Sorry. I am a massage therapist and usually work 1-2 nights a week doing one or two appointments each night and on Sat and/or Sun Mornings and try to be done by noon.

I voted SAHM but do work outside the home 2 hours 2x a week at a church nursery.I've worked there almost 10 years.I always been allowed to bring my youngest child with me and do until they are over one year then I start leaving them home w/DH sometimes.I have at times brought 3 kids with me when dh was overseas so it's not like a regular job where they can't go with me.
