View Full Version : Strange occurrence--cookies being placed from reading threads?

When I clicked on Allison's thread about swing confessions (much less exciting than the recent Oprah ;)), boppy.com wanted to put a cookie on my computer. I don't know what DH did, but now every website asks before doing that (this was just in the past couple of days).

I thought this was strange, and wondered if anyone else had that experience. Someone in the thread mentioned a product by Boppy, so maybe they have a way of tracing that? It has happened with other threads, but I've never recognized the company name before and thought it was just a freak occurrence. Now, I'm getting suspicious!

Thoughts?

There was a pic of a boppy product, but is sounds like you may have a virus or spyware infection.

When is the last time your ran Norton?

I had a similar experience -- the details of which escape me now -- and I emailed the Field's asking if we were being tracked. Never got a response.

It's perfectly normal and there is nothing wrong with your computer.

The image in the thread is hosted on boppy.com and boppy.com (like most commercial sites) is probably set up to track various things about people who access their site. So when you open that thread, your computer goes to boppy.com to get the image to display and the boppy site "sees" you and places the cookie, along with whatever they want to track about you.

Thanks for the explanation. I will call off the investigative reporters. ;)
