DVD software for digital camcorders

I'm getting DH a digital camcorder for Christmas and I heard that the software that comes with it (Sony) isn't very good. Does anyone know what type of software I should buy? Also, I decided to splurge and get the one that takes actual DVDs. Do you recommend getting a DVD burner as well (although that might throw me over the edge). How do work a DVD burner with the computer?

DH uses Pinnacle's Studio 9 and really likes it. He actually went hunting around through various programs and ended up getting this one. We do have a DVD burner, which is installed in one of the slots, just like a CD ROM drive would be installed. If you're going to be making DVD videos, it would make sense to get a burner.

We have Pinnacle Studio as well and like it for the most part. I think it's pretty user friendly. And, you can add lots of different music (or voiceovers), different transitions, titles and as many still photos as you want.

We have a DVD burner, which is very nice. You can burn a video CD on a CD burner, but the quality is not as good.

Actually having the DVD video recorder, I don't know about, although I thought the advantage was supposed to be for people who didn't want to edit the movies. Perhaps there's enhanced quality too. I don't know.

Actually, when we bought ours last Christmas the guy said that the quality on the DVD camcorders wasn't nearly as good as what you'd get with a mini DV tape and then editing it on your computer. We ended up going with a mini DV Cannon just for that reason. I think you can also only record something like 30 minutes on the DVD ones, and they're not compatible with all DVD players. He suggested waiting a few years for them to enhance the technology and for the price to come down. We decided the price (double what our aprox $400 mini DV cost) wasn't worth it with all the above issues.
