any ideas? We have an old car that I'd like to donate to a charity that can hopefully pick it up at our place.

TIA

I don't know where you live, but our NPR station (WBUR in Boston) advertises about donating cars. You might check your local station.

Our old car was just picked up last week by the American Cancer Society. Fabulous organization and super-easy to donate. I called their toll-free number, they connected me to the local office who emailed me the paperwork to fill out (2 pages--basically an affidavit you sign that says you are transferring the title to them). We signed the papers and mailed them in. The group that picks up the car called us 5 days later and told us when they were going to pick it up. Voila--no more car. :)

You can do this all online, provide your address and they will mail you the paperwork (I just chose to call because I wanted it gone sooner than later). Here's the link:

After my mom's battle with cancer, I knew that I wanted to donate my car to the AMC. But I know that there are other organizations that accept cars.

GL! :)

We donated one to the American Lung Association a few years ago. Our local chapter had a garage pick it up at our house with a tow truck - no charge. It's tax deductable. Here's a link for more info:

Salvation army will also pick up a used vehicle. They advertise on our radio station all the time.

A- Purple Heart takes them. We donated our car this summer to a local place that picked it up. Something to benefit children. I'll try to find the details (though I don't think they'd drive to the other end of the states for your car.)

We donated our car to Volunteers of America last year. It was very painless and they will pick it up from you (even if it doesn't run.) Here's more information: www.CarsHelpingPeople.org

We donated DH's car last year to American Cancer Society. Make sure that you print out (online) the Kellys Blue Book value for your taxes too! We didn't deduct the whole thing but a percentage of it.

It all went very smoothly too. :)

We used http://www.donateacar.com/charities.html to donate our car. It was really easy and well executed. You can pick from a varierty of charities.

Our local regional paper just ran this "investigation" last week:

Be sure to research just how much your charity will benefit.

And make sure you do it this tax year. The laws around donating vehicles changes January 1, 2005.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation will take old car donations as well. I found their ad in the paper, and all my husband had to do was call, give them some information (make, model, VIN number, etc) and they came and picked the cars up a day or two later. It was really easy!

I would suggest pickign up a copy of your local paper, and also those free papers like GreenSheet and PennySaver. Here in Phoenix, at least, charities will put a small ad in teh paper asking for car donations.

And like a PP mentioned, definitely do it this tax year because the rules change Jan1, 2005!

We used the American Cancer Society to donate my old car. As a PP said, it was very easy and they came and picked it up. My only advice is to make sure to call the DMV a month or so after the car has been picked up to make sure they've recorded the transfer of title. When I called to check on mine, the DMV said they'd "never received" the transfer of title paperwork I sent in after the car was picked up.
