I am delving into the mini DV world. Anyone have any recommendations? My budget is around $500. Using it mostly for home movies, vacations etc. Thanks

We have the Canon mini DV recorder - model is ZR something (6500 maybe??). I don't know how to do any of the fancy stuff with it, but we like it well enough. It was around $400, but there is a model up from our with a few more bells and whistles that's probably around $500.

We just did a bunch of research on these and ended up buying the Sony HC40 from http://www.bhphotovideo.com/. We paid $509, but the price went up the next day. You might call and ask if they'd price match their previous price from earlier this month. They offered free shipping and we couldn't find a lower price at the time.

Good luck.

We also have a Canon ZR....mini DV. We are happy with it. It does tend to have more motor noise than some, but we knew that when we bought it and it was a great bargain, so it was worth it. It isn't great with still pics, but we have a digital, so rarely use it for that anyway.

We have a Canon ZR 85 and like it a lot. We haven't noticed any motor noise and like the anti-shake and night-shot features. Recharges fast, nice and small, under $500 ($379 at Best Buy right now).....we're happy.
