I'm going MIA- my FIL had a stroke

My Father-in-law had a stroke Saturday. It is pretty bad right now. They did emergency surgery to remove two blood clots in his neck but he has massive brain swelling. Right now, 18 hours after surgery, he isn't responding too much- barely squeezes the nurses' or MIL's hand, and can't talk at all. They are already saying he will have to go into assisted living. Thankfully, hospital where he is at currently is only 30 minutes away. One plus of this situation is that it has brought my husband's family back together. They had been fighting recently (not us, but everyone else). Anyway, this is a pretty rough time, so I will likely be "missing in action" occassionally. Just didn't want anyone to worry about me if I don't post for a while. Thanks for any prayers for my FIL (Tom Sr.)

I'll be thinking of you and praying for your family. And just to add, as a PT in an acute care hospital, I see lots of stroke patients come around much further than we ever would have expected once the swelling in the brain goes down. There are no guarantees or ways to definitely predict what's going to happen, but things may look much better a few days from now.

I'm so sorry Julie. This is such awful news. My DH's father had a stroke 11 years ago. He was put in a nursing home for a few years but he progressed well enough to come home for a few more years. I'll be thinking of you and your family.

I am so sorry. Please keep us posted. Talk to the social workers at the hospital about finding an elder care advocate. They can help your family navigate finding the most appropriate living situation, insurance and health coverage issues. We went through a similar situation with my Grandmother several years ago. The advocate was a life saver.
