Do you need to have a business license for an online biz? I collect and pay sales tax on transactions within my state, as my business is online only. I just got something from the city, letting me know that i need a business tax certificate. I didn't need it in the city I lived in prior to our move within the state.

Any one have experience with this?

TIA.

Hi A,

I'm trying to figure this out too. I have a packet of info that my DH received by attending a Small Business conference and there are several websites that I am using:

http://www.score.org/ SCORE is a volunteer program that is run by business people to help others to create their own Small Business.

http://www.sba.gov/starting/indexsteps.html is a great resource I am using. The page is called "First Steps How to Start a Small Business."

http://www.sba.gov/starting/indexsteps.html This is from the same page as above, but the title is The US Small Business Administration's Small Business STartup Kit.

Good luck!!

My village does not require a business license, so I do not have one for my online business, but every village/city is different. But I do have a state sales tax ID number, for collecting and remitting sales tax.

I called SBA yesterday and they didn't know. I have taken some classes through them and it is a great resource.

I just got my EIN online tonight. It took about 10 mins. So now I'm registered to open for business on the first. Here's the website: http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=102767,00.html

Lori,
have you had to deal with any zoning requirements for your biz?
Thanks.

I'm not sure if there is a difference. And I don't know if you really need an EIN. I just don't like giving out my SSN.

Good luck!
