how to pick a new email name?

Any tricks? I need to pick an email name for my new service, but I don't want anything too common because I'll get spam or it will already be taken. I am not sure of the security issues of using my full (or partial) name as my email name. (Plus there are a million Julies). I want to be able to live with it for a long time and not regret it. Is it good to have numbers in your name or bad? I tried to google for some suggestions on how to pick an email name, but it comes up with tons of irrelevant hits. So, how do I avoid the pitfalls of spam, security, spelling, and already taken names? (And my last name is 11 letters long... so it is probably best to avoid using it?)
