I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas or has heard of any way that we can help. I might contact the local red cross and try to start something up, but just wondered if anyone had heard anything.

Jessie,
You are so kind to think of the families affected by the tragedy. I am trying to look into ways to help too and would like to find a reliable charity.

ETA: oops. accidentally posted as BF. Now, my giftee needs to guess soon so I can post as me on this thread.

I got some names from a charity called Idex.org that I donate to for women's empowerment programs.

They suggested-
http://www.ifrc.org/index.asp (International Red Cross)
http://www.aidindia.org/ (Aid India)
http://www.icaonline.org/ (Indians for Collective Action )

I don't have experience with either of the Indian charities, but like to pick one where most of the funds go toward the cause as opposed to management expenses. With Idex, I was able to have 100% of the donation go toward the cause, which I thought was pretty cool. Normally, approx. 40% goes toward management expenses.

Red Cross is probably the easiest. Over 23,000 dead...I really can't comprehend it.

I heard tonight there are more than 60,000 dead now? And they expect thousands more. It's shocking. I'm honestly dumbfounded & so saddened by this and yet I cannot stop watching the news stories about it. Did anyone hear the story about the Swedish toddler that literally washed up on a beach & he's ok? I was balling my eyes out listening to the news & hugging DD as tightly as she'd let me. They had to figure out who he was & who his parents were. His Mom is still listed as missing & his father was badly injured. I just wanted to hug that little toddler. Amazon has set up a link to donate directly to the Red Cross. It's on their main page. www.amazon.com
