Why do my towels stink! They have this icky, musty smell when wet and I can't get it out. When they're dry it's not noticable, but wet a washcloth to use it and it almost knocks me over.

I think that it started since we got our front loader but I could be wrong. I use Tide HE when I can find it or regular Tide (smaller amount) when I can't.

I have hard water - at least I assume that I do from the build-up of minerals that we get on our faucets!

Thanks for any suggestions! I'm ready to throw these all away and get new but I don't want to have the same problem in a couple of months!

It sounds to me like you have detergent build up. Try adding some calgon (found in the laundry aisle, Kroger carries it or you can order it online) water softener to a hot wash and continue hot washes until you can't see anymore suds.

Do you have a Matag? There is a class action law suit regarding mold build-up in Maytag front loading washers. A few posters mentioned this in the thread below on front loaders. This is from the site

http://www.maytagfrontloadsettlement.com/faq.html

"This lawsuit alleges that owners of Maytag® Neptune® Front-Load Washing Machines have claims concerning the door latch, wax motor, motor control and related circuit board failures, causing the machines to function improperly and users to experience odor, mold and mildew. They are asking the Court for repayment of the money spent to purchase and/or repair their Neptune® washers or damages equal to the diminished value of their appliances. Maytag has responded that it's product is not defective, denies that it did anything wrong, and contends that it attempted to fix or repair all concerns raised by its customers."

If it's not the mold (i.e. you don't have a Maytag), then it could be 1) detergent build up, in which case you can do a wash of them with just calgon and an extra rinse, or
2) you're not using enough detergent for hard water. In which case you add just a tad more and then make sure you rinse well.

If both, I would do a wash in some extra detergent, then do a wash with the calgon and rinse twice.

I have found it also helps to leave the door open so the inside can dry after you finish all your loads. The rubber part around the opening can get mildew and smell pretty gross.

My washer had a bad smell to it a couple of months ago so I did a web searched and it said that if I put a cup of powdered dishwasher detergent and a cup of white vineger.(I think that's the right amounts) in the washer and ran it with hot water it would get rid of smell. Also stop it after it's filled and let it sit 20-30 minutes. It worked and no more smell.HTH
