So here's a little toddler funny for you... I have fallen into that annoying but useful habit of spelling words I don't want Ava to understand. Tonight at dinner DH was making fun of one of our friends and I (jokingly) told him to stop being an A-S-S-H-O-L-E (spelled out of course).

Ava, not missing a beat, says with a big grin, "Ah Ah Oh Ah Oh Oh Ah". DH and I almost fell over laughing. Guess I can't even curse by spelling anymore!

And lest I had any remaining doubt that she sees right through my spelling, after dinner I told DH I was going upstairs to start Ava's B-A-T-H. She promptly squealed "Mimi! Mimi!", which is the name of the little monkey who gets a bath in one of her books.

So much for that! :)

Wow, how old is Ava! Just can't get anything past these smart toddlers, can you? Thanks for the laugh--it's really a cute story!

She's 17 months, and apparently, already smarter than her mama :)

Wow, quite advanced, I guess. So does this mean she knows her ABC's already, or has she just associated different spellings with certain words/activities? Hmm...I better start singing the ABC's to my kiddo, heh, heh.

So should I be saying, "Uh, oh..." to the things you have to face in the future with such a smart kid? :P

That is so funny! They really are smarter than we think a lot of the time!

Jonah has the B-A-T-H thing figured out, too. :)

Oh well, you'd rather her spell it than say it, right?!

LOL! Well, she's not reading Shakespeare just yet. She does know *some* letters, but I think it's more likely that she has heard me spell B-A-T-H before and figured out that a bath follows shortly thereafter.

Similarly, I taught her to "read" the word LOVE and a few others. She doesn't actually read, of course, but she knows that letters that look like that say LOVE. It was fun to see DH's reaction when we showed him that little trick ;)

That's such a cute story, Robyn. I guess this is what I have to look forward too. We're still in the "watch what we say even though we don't really have to" spot.

Meredith can understand "night-night" though, or at least the sequence of events. Ever since her separation anxiety has gotten really bad she has had a rough time at bedtime. I will say "night night" and as soon as she sees DH coming for her to take her to bed, she starts grabbing my shirt and bawling. It is so pathetic and sad, yet humorous in a way. Some nights DH is not even ready to take her to bed but she sees him and starts flipping out. Anyway . . . hijacking over. :-)

We have the Mimi's Toes book here too! :-) Meredith doesn't take it to the bath, just chews on it. :-)

Apparently, that's how my sisters and I learned to "read". It was through word recognition because my mom read to us ALL the time. Supposedly, we were all able to read simple books at age 3. We were definitely reading new books before we started school. She's pretty sure it was because she read to us all the time. Of course, who knows how much our parents actually remember about that! :) But I do remember reading before starting school, so maybe she's right.

Meanwhile, I read to Kaya, but she doesn't really look at the books when I do it. She's just starting to look at the pictures and pointing out things that she recognizes, though. So that's kind of cool. The interesting thin is that DH reads the same two books to her every night before she goes to sleep, and she will do signs of certain things when she hears about them (she doesn't always look at the book). So I'm thinking she may be more of an aural learner than I am (thank goodness, I'm a horrible aural learner).
