So, Colwyn is a shorty. That's my one saving grace with this kid, because he can climb practically anything, except his crib. When he's in it, the top of the rail comes up to his chin almost, and he's never been able to get out of it so far. But he certainly tries, and I'm sure he would be able to if he were taller. He also tries to climb into it, but again, is too short.

My question is.. do you switch them to a toddler bed when they actually can climb out, or when they start trying? I estimate that Colwyn has another two inches to grow before he might be able to do it, so I know we have some time. But is it negligent for me to leave him in there when I know he's always trying to climb out?

Thanks!

Put up a crib tent! I'm fortunate that Kaya has not tried to climb her crib yet, but I think the crib tent sort of helps to psychologically prevent that. I've heard of many parents finding the crib tent to be very effective in keeping a toddler from climbing out. It will extend his time in the crib, especially if he (and you) are not ready for him to be in the toddler bed.

Colwyn is about the same age as Nathan. He is tall and could climb out if he chose ( just hasnt). I put the rail down. My thinking is if it is down and he chooses to climb out its not as far to fall. My first 2 climbed out by 16months. They climbed like monkeys using their toes to grip. I put a baby gate on the bedroom door when we went to a twin bed with rails on the side. They rarely fell out of bed . We had a low bunk bed style of twin. My SIL uses the tent for her son. I dont think I will with Nathan. I dont know if that helps but my sisters kids never climbed out of their cribs.

Colin started climbing out of his crib last September. We slapped a crib tent on there, and he still sleeps in it (with no climbing) now, at about 41" tall.

So, you can switch him at that time if you want, or get a crib tent. IMO, 2 years was just too young for a toddler bed, and I didn't want to mess with Colin's great sleep habits.
