View Full Version : I Think We're Teething! Need Tips and Advice.

DD is 5 1/2 months old and I think she is in the early stages of teething. We can't keep her hands out of her mouth and she goes after things like a woman possessed! She's a little crankier than usual as well. She's happy if I distract her. She always puts things in her mouth, but it is the intensity of it that makes me think the teething is starting.

What I want to know is what can I do for her to make her more comfortable? I have teething rings in the fridge and I don't want to resort to Orajel because I know that numbs the whole mouth. I'm looking for advice now so I can be ready when it really intensifies. I don't really like things like Tylenol - the drops are loaded with sugar and it makes her hyper. I found this out when I gave it to her after her vaccinations.

Any word of wisdom are greatly appreciated!

I always found that an ice cube in a baby safe feeder worked wonders! The teething rings never seemed to help her very much. For night time, I use Humphrey's Teething Tablets, a homeopathic remedy that doesn't seem to have any side effects and which really seems to help her sleep better when she's teething.

Yoy can also fill the baby safe feeder with frozen peas or other frozen fruits (peaches, watermelon, grapes, etc.). When she's older you can give her frozen peas directly. Good luck.

If she takes a paci, you can freeze some water in the paci (if it is like a NUK) for her. Kami loves this! Just need to have a bib on her or the melted water comes out all over her clothes. :)

Thanks for the good tips - looking for anymore you have to offer.

Where do I get Humphrey's Teething Tablets?

I also wanted to know if anyone notices that their DC gets "hyper" when teething. DD is a VERY active baby anyway, but recently I've noticed that she is almost hyperactive. She squirms and flips over during feedings and kicks and flings her arms more than usual, even when trying to settle down at bedtime which is usually when she is the most calm. Do you think this is all related?

You can get either Humphrey's or Hyland's at any drug store. I think Rite Aid sells Hyland's while Walgreens sells Humphrey's. Either one works just fine.

As for the hyperactivity, I don't think it's directly related to the teething. Rather, I think it disrupts Kaya's sleep, which is what makes her hyperactive (overtired). That's my theory anyway.

So far, knocking wood really hard, it hasn't disrupted her sleep, just getting her to go to sleep. Of course, not that I posted that, she'll be up every hour tonight!

Well, in Kaya's case, part of disrupting her sleep is making it harder for her to fall asleep. But yes, overall, teething doesn't seem to bother her that much in terms of sleep. It does make her fussier, though, and sometimes it does seem to cause night wakings (although she usually goes back to sleep--she's just more restless).

DS really liked his vibrating teething toy. When we first started using it, he didn't know how to chomp down on the toy to make it work, so I would hold it for him.

We started using the Hyland's teething tablets after reading about them here. They really seem to calm him down when he's upset about the pain.

Some of the kids took to chewing strings. Strings from my bikini tops, strings hanging off of shorts, you name it. Weird I know....but they were happy. Most of the traditional teething toys they could have cared less about. It is a tough stage for some babies. Just try to stay patient and buy a few different types of teethers. She'll let you know what she prefers.
Hyland's teething tablets also worked, but just for Ansley.

You might want to try the Tylenol again. It might work better for teething than it did for after vaccinations.

I also agree with PP about ice cubes in the mesh feeder.
