Well, DH did it again. He's an absolute genius with the sewing machine...chalk it up to all the military training on sewing parachutes for fighter pilot ejection seats. Friday I was telling DH that our good friend was complaining about still needing a chaning pad cover (she gave birth to a beautiful baby boy June 6th-John Michael :)). So, he said, "Buy it, then." But I told him how the reviews here on the boards said that the Simmons terry cloth countour changing pad covers were negative, that they shrunk so bad they didn't fit after the first washing, and that they fall apart with frequent use. Then, I asked if he thought we could make one.

So, last night we got some blue terry cloth ($5/yd) and a sample Simmons version. I washed the fabric in hot water and dried it on high heat twice to preshrink it. From out of his brain he clipped squares from each corner, sewed them together w/ a 1-inch seam, and hemmed a pocket to thread bungee cord for the elastic to hold it around the pad. 45 min later, VOILA! Check out the pics. I just had to brag at how awesome he is. He even made one for us for later on when we need it, and hemmed the scraps for baby washcloths. I hope she enjoys it. Not only is it better quality, but we saved $10 doing it ourselves...and it was "sew easy."

Sounds like he could open up shop! I hate using our changing pad covers, they don't fit well at all. I'll take 3. I'd like a turquoise blue, chocolate brown, and white. :)

That's so awesome, by the way! I'd be bragging too! Congrats on having such a crafty and handy DH!

Very good!!! Next time, have him make you some out of velour - soooo much yummier than terry cloth!

I think you're right about the velour. All the terry cloth ones are slightly rough and "scratchy" maybe, even the Simmons pre-made ones. I was debating between the velour backed terry cloth and the regular tc and I just didn't think I'd be saving any money b/c it was $9/yd vs $5/yd and as a first project that's too much to possibly mess up...esp since the premade ones are only $13-$15.

I'd love to find out exactly what fabric those PBK chamois changing pad covers are made out of b/c THAT would be a killer way to save $20!

Hey, don't fabric stores like Joann's Fabrics and Hancock have coupons where you can take a dollar or percentage off any regular priced fabric purchase?

WOW! What a talented DH he is. If he feels like making a pink one for me, I'll take it! :)

Yes, they always have 40% off coupons.Just sign up on their mailing list.I love fabric stores.Just wish the one here was bigger. Your Dh did a great job. BTW I bought mostly cotton velour on a co-op for about $5 a yard and it is soooo soft. There's also a fabric called minky that's very soft.

Am I mistaken, or did your dh also make that shelf a few months ago?

Yes, unfortunately since he's perfect, he has time for everything, including making corned beef and cabbage from scratch tonight, planting veggies in our garden, mowing the lawn, cleaning the house (yes, he even mopped the floors, cleaned the bathrooms and did 3 loads of laundry), all while sick with bronchitis.

I'll start the bidding at one million dollars.

Gosh, wait til I show everyone the pictures of the diaper bag he made me when I was expecting this last time. It's gorgeous! But it's safely tucked away until we need it again. :(

I know, he's a keeper.

Lol, what a guy! Well, I just wanted to tell you that I had my bro make that shelf with the plans you emailed me and it turned out great! He did it a bit differently because he decided to sort of wing it for fun, but it's still terrific. So thanks to you and your (perfect ;)) hubby!
