View Full Version : "My child did something new today!" Show & Tell thread

I thought that it could be fun to have a thread devoted to Mommies and Daddies who want to brag about new things that the DS or DD noticed or did. I'm happy to start:

My 10-week old, Sean, just started this yesterday. Apparently, he loves ceiling fans when they're turned on. If you hold him underneath, he starts to move his head around (like he's watching it go around in a circle), then he gets this HUGE grin on his face as if the fan told him a great joke or something. He'd do it all day if I had the energy to hold him there and he didn't need feeding breaks. ;) :D

Okay, all you proud parents, feel free to contribute your own stories. :)

Well, we've been wondering when Andrew would learn to stand up from sitting. He's been walking since February and only twice has stood up on his own and never at home.

Tuesday, he climbed (his newest thing) onto the coffee table and, yes, he stood up. Can't stand up in the middle of the room, but on the coffee table? Sure!

Well, this may not count much for show and tell but it cracked me up! We spent 9 days at my moms last week (can you say spoiled grandson?) and yesterday I told him he could not jump off the back of the couch. He got mad and told me "I go to Grandmommy's house" and went to put his shoes on!!!! I just about died laughing......

Meredith (10 1/2 mos.) has started to "dance" while sitting down (she doesn't yet stand). It's the cutest thing! If she hears music with a good beat, she'll just start bopping up and down and get the biggest grin on her face.

Fun thread!

Riordan (14 months) has just started to sign sentences all on her own, to ask where something is or to say she doesn't want food, she wants that one....it's amazing!! She does over 40 signs, and understands several others.

Yesterday for the frist time she tried to feed her bottle to her teddy bear. :)

And yes, Kris...the climbing. Oh, heart attack central, that....

Wow! For someone who nearly stopped signing because Riordan wasn't signing back yet, you're doing awesome! I bet you're glad you continued. We're still waiting for that "signing explosion" I keep reading about. We've seemed to have lost water, eat, and more, but gained bath, daddy, and milk lately. So, we're still at only a handful of signs, despite us doing them all the time.

That is so great for you and Rory!

Carrie just finally started babbling yesterday. We spent the whole day exchanging "ba-ba-ba"s - with a couple of "ma-ma-ma"s thrown in for good measure - and this is on top of her starting to sign "milk" just the night before. I think we're having a language explosion over here!

Avery (almost 11 months) just this past week has really started to mimic our talking. She says "ack" for milk, "ock" for sock, block, and book, and "sssssssss" for Sophie (the dog). She also signed milk recognizably for the first time today. It's amazing how quickly this stuff comes once it starts!

Last week, I was in the kitchen with DS when somehow, unbeknownst to me, he got the hand mixer out of the drawer, plugged it in and turned it on! Thankfully the beaters were in the dishwasher.

Is anyone else amazed by their child's memory? I videotaped him one day, just eating breakfast and talking with him. Several days later, I showed the video to DH. As we watched, DS said everything he said on the video -- BEFORE he said it on the video. He remembered the whole conversation! I thought that was amazing.

He'll also recite the pages of books he hasn't read in a month.

I wish I had that memory! I have pregnant brain memory, i.e. I leave just-purchased groceries sitting in the garage for 5 hours and have to throw them away.

Hmm...okay, so Kaya is 16 months. Not a whole lot new, although she does seem to be getting the hang of the whole signing thing (but not the way Rory is doing!), and is starting to do book, and maybe mommy and daddy. DH keeps pushing the whole mommy and daddy thing with her because oddly enough, she still doesn't say/sign those two words. I think she may get it soon, though. This morning she did actually say Mama and signed milk, so MAYBE....

She's learning to play tag--I chase her around, and then she chases me around. It's a lot of fun! I also gave her one of those wooden stacking toys yesterday, and lo and behold, she managed to stack all of them, albeit not in the right order. But it was very cool that she did it.

Oh, and she "spots"! We were at the chiro yesterday and I put her on one of those rolling chairs and started spinning her around. First off, she put her hands on either handle to keep from falling over, and then as I spun her around and around, one of the chiros noticed that she was "spotting"! She only did it counterclockwise and not clockwise, but later when we got home, DH got her attention while I spun her and she was able to do it both ways. Very funny.

As for the climbing thing...yikes! We're planning on getting her a Little Tikes playground this summer so that she can hopefully climb on that and not the backs of chairs!

Eileen - Mia would never sign mommy (she would do daddy, the stinker!) and she didn't say it for the LONGEST time! I can't remember now when it was she started (sometime last summer b/w 15-18 months I think), but it was the sweetest thing ever when she finally did. Of course, now, I could use a break from the constant "mamas" "mommies" and "moms" and her newest, gotten from DH, is to stand at the top of the stairs and yell "HEY HOL!" Lovely!

Hang in there, mama! I've seen Kaya with you and it is obvious from all she does you are the center of her universe. Those mamas are going to come along soon!

I'm new (not to lurking--sorry! lots of good info here--but to posting b/c I can't really post at work) and thought this was a good one to jump into!

For intro, I'm a WOHM to my 12-month dd. She has a few words and a few signs and is BUSY.

Lately, she has become fascinated with the potty. As soon as her nanny says anything about her nanny-mate being wet, she runs to the basket and retrieves a diaper, the wipes, the changing pad, etc. and pats the floor for him to lay down. If you ask her if she is wet (and she is wet), she tries to take off her diaper through her clothes, yelling "bop bop!" (proud parents translate to potty) and running for the bathroom where she'll pat the toilet lid repeatedly. Now what?!

(okay, perhaps introducing myself with a potty story wasn't the way to go!!! :) Hmmm, I'll have to think of a sweeter story to tell...)

DS (15mths) has started kissing people on the phone. If I give him the phone and say give Nana a kissy, he'll put his mouth to the mouthpiece and give a big mmmmmm....mmmmah!!! No surprise, all the grandparents are thrilled to bits :)

To the OP, DS is fascinated with fans too. He'll crane his neck back and reach out his hand as if he can pull the cords that dangle down from the fan!

As many of you know, Susanna has been in physical therapy since March for a gross motor delay. We had her quarterly review with her therapist yesterday morning and she's met all of the goals originally set on March 24th. As if on cue, yesterday, I put her down on carpet in her bare feet and she stood there on her own for 45-60 seconds. She didn't freak out, get scared, or just plain ol' sit down. She has been standing independently for up to 10 seconds for a couple of weeks but this was the longest. She just turned 1 on Wednesday and I was practically in tears when she did that yesterday because her review yesterday morning just reminded us that just 2.5 - 3 months ago, she wasn't even rolling over. No steps yet but we're absolutely astonished by what she's accomplished in such a short time.

Jack's newest trick is rolling onto his side and getting his fist in his mouth. He also can now grab the toys on the gymini and pull those into his mouth (and I'm trying not to dwell on how dirty they must be, since the gymini is from when Mia was a baby and you can only surface wash those toys - yuck!)

Mia is a whirlwind of development these days - I can hardly keep track of all her new tricks. The latest I can think of is that she will now put her face underwater in the baby pool in our backyard and blow bubbles. We seem to have a little fish on our hands!

I loved reading these posts!!
Not really anyhting "new" but an association was made two nights ago that CRACKED ME UP!!!
DH was holding DD and he didn't have a shirt on. And well lets just say that he is a little on the hairy side. ;) So DD ran her fingers over DH's chest hair and promptly signed Cat and said "Bapt" which is her word for cat.... And the cat was no where around. :D
I said "Yes, Daddy is hairy like the cat!" She smiled and clapped and DH did a fake pout...but I couldn't stop laughing!

Charlie's verbal skills took some leaps this week --

When it is time to leave in the morning he runs to the door and says "BYE!"

Last night he handed DH a book and said "Here Daddy" and when Daddy took it, he said "Thanks!"

He chased after the cat saying "Meow"

If you ask him where his belly button is, he lifts his shirt.

Driving home yesterday he saw a man in the car next to us who looked a little like Grandpa. I distinctly heard him say "Gampa" as he stared intently at him.

All pretty cool stuff. He blows me away.

On a more basic front, he started eating cheese with no problems. He has had a dairy problem for a long time, and that time seems to be coming to end, thankfully. I can eat cheese again too! Yay!

Hi, Zana! That's really sweet that your DS kisses over the phone to grandparents on command. :) I bet they're tickled and want to call you all the time now. ;) :D

Really, all the responses here have been great. Thanks to all of you for contributing! :)

Thank goodness that ceiling fans are out of our DS' reach! Otherwise, I might fear for their safety. ;) (Oh, lordy, maybe I should ban floor model oscillating fans from our house based on this. I'm not sure if those things are even mentioned in the child-proofing checklists.)

Lane absolutely cracks me up. We went shopping this morning and I was trying his new clothes on him when we got home. After I put a new shirt on, he rubbed his chest and said "mmmm..... feels nice!".

And little Faye started rolling over. She went back to tummy on Sunday on tummy to back this morning. I'm getting scared at the unavoidable prospect of 2 mobile kiddos!

Hey, she was watching signing times today and they were doing the "mommy" part and she turned around and looked at me and very clearly said, "mama" and came towards me. My heart just melted! I wonder if she's finally getting it? :D

ETA: DH told me that she's been saying Mama every morning recently when he gets her to bring her to me for her morning milk. So we think she's finally starting to realize I'm Mama. :7 Oh and as I finished nursing her to put her to bed, I let her out so we could get daddy to put her to sleep with a book, and she did the Daddy sign (well sideways from the temple) and said Da-Da! It's about time! :P

For about the last week, Kai picks any number of inanimate objects and assigns them the titles of "Daddy", "Mommy" or "Baby". Rocks, balls, stuffed toys, blocks, anything.

The funniest one was yesterday, I brought out his wooden alphabet magnets that are upper and lower case, and we had been calling them "Big A, little a", "Big B, little B" previously. Last night he held up a lowercase T and said "Baby T!" Then he found the uppercase one and said "Mommy T"!

I have never been a happier mama to see my girlie walk up the stairs, months ago we weren't sure she would ever walk. She finally started a few weeks ago and only 3 days after she really started to walk (not just random steps) she can walk all the way up the staircase by herself!! She is 21 months.

Well, I'm not sure how proud I am of this but....Nathan did something new yesterday AND today...rip his poopy diaper off in his crib!!!!!!!!! Ahhh! I've been putting him down at night with only a diaper on...guess I won't be doing that anymore. I'll have to put a onsie on or something just to make it more difficult for him to get at his diaper. He had it everywhere...even near his mouth, so I shudder to think that he may have had a taste!! Talk about a sensory experience!!!!!!!!

ETA: Sorry if this info. wasn't appropriate for this thread!! I guess I read the title and thought that my story fit!! Oops!!! Just had to share, as this experience was new...but horrible!!!!! One of the many joys of parenting that make it REAL!

Hmmmm...

Logan learned to blow bubbles the other day with a bubble wand. He actually did it several times which surprised me! He can't always get it to work, but he sure is excited when he does it himself.

He seems to learn about 2-3 new words a day at this point, which is fun!! He's probably at 100+ words now. The other day I unpacked some more of his toys, many of which he hasn't seen in a month. I took out a small wooden train he has, and he saw it, got a big grin, ran over and said "Choo Choo."

Today we were in this gigantic fabric store and he kept playing peek-a-boo with random strangers and giggling while in the aisles. He also now hides in the closet of our office in the new house, and then peeks out and says "Boo" which is pretty funny.

We went in the Apple store the other day to get my iBook repaired. DH was in there a loooong time with the guys in there. I took DS outside so he could run around. On my way out of the store he kept saying Dada louder and louder. I kept shushing him as a class was going on in the store, and he kept saying it louder and giggling. I would teasingly try to sort of cover his mouth and shush him and he'd just crack up. Yes, not the best thing to encourage I guess, but he totally knew he was being funny, kwim? It isn't something he typically does so DH and I found it amusing.

I rarely share any brags, but I sure did a pretty good job there LOL ;) We're having so much fun with him at this stage (16 months).

My DD laughed for the first time today (while watching our ceiling fan). It was so fabulous to hear this little person's giggle coming out of her mouth. I was actually teary eyed over it.

DD can correctly identify numbers! We discovered this the other day when she pointed at a number on a magazine cover and said "Seven!" We tried it with other numbers to make sure it wasn't a fluke and it's the real thing. She's also learning to count, although that's not completely there yet.
