I would like to start a collection of movies for my children to watch. (Our signing times days are over.)
So far we have:
My Fair Lady
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
James and the Giant Peach
Snow White
Dumbo
The Sound of Music

What is on your list?

My neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away, they are great Japanese animated movies. Totoro is probably appropriate from age 2 or so, Spirited Away more like 5 and above, I think.

Wizard of Oz? (maybe too scary until school age?)

The Parent Trap (the original, with Haley Mills)

Whale Rider: For older kids, but its an awesome movie

Fern Gully, the last rain forest: great environment theme

Chitty chitty bang bang: Good fun,in the 'Sound of music' mould

The Jungle Book (original version from Disney): DS and I wiggle our butts like Balloo whenever its on!

We love The Sound of Music, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Dumbo here. I had forgotten about James and the Giant Peach.

Another good one is the original Mary Poppins, as well as some cartoons like the Jungle Book and Peter Pan (though some scenes might not be appropriate for some children.) Maybe Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (haven't seen that in years so I'm not sure. I know some of our friends' kids love Annie.

Great idea for a thread.

>James and the Giant Peach
>Snow White
>Dumbo
>The Sound of Music

We also have those along with

The Music Man
Fun & Fancy Free
Mary Poppins
Alice in Wonderland

Just wanted to mention that we just watched James & Giant Peach (it's the Tim Burton one). It was a hand me down video, and it's really good. I had never seen it before, and both the kids & I like it a lot.

Singing In The Rain -

Anne - the original movie

Hans Christian Anderson - w/Danny Kaye AWESOME MOVIE!!! Danny is Hans and it goes through many of his children classic stories - The Ugly Duckling and such. Parts are dancy/artsy but as a little girl I loved watching the ballerina's so I was never bored!

That Darn Cat - Halley Mills

Thomasina - Halley Mills

A Little Princess, GREAT MOVIE!!! - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113670/

or The Little Princess w/ Shirley Temple

The Rug Rats

The Three Stooges - not sure what age would be appropriate, I watched them young and turned out alright, I think ;)

SO that's a start, I'll try to think of more, I just LOVE classics!

We love:

The Sound of Music
James and the Giant Peach
Mary Poppins
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Charlotte's Web
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Bedknobs and Broomsticks
Eloise (for older kids, one of my favorites because my DD reminds me of Eloise!)
various Disney movies - my girls love Winnie the Pooh, Peter Pan, Dumbo, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast, Snow White, Alice in Wonderland, The Little Mermaid - basically anything with a princess in it!

Other great kid movies that aren't necessarily classics but are nice stories:

Clifford
Kipper
The Wiggles, great for music and dancing!

I'm sure there are others, but that's all I can think of right now!

So far, just about every movie on my list has already been mentioned. The only ones not mentioned so far, but which are mostly for somewhat older kids:

Finding Nemo
Lady and the Tramp
Spirit (of the Cimmaron) (as opposed to spirited away)
Princess Bride
101 Dalmations (both the original and the live-action remake)
Beauty and the Beast

Everyone's already given great suggestions.

Sound of Music is at the top of my list.

Also, for animated ones, Dumbo, Bambi, Lady and the Tramp, Snow White, Cinderella and The Rescusers (my favorite animated movie growing up).

Newer ones that I think are good are Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp's Adventure, Toy Story, Toy Story II, Monster's, Inc., Ice Age.

Also, there are DVDs of Little House on the Prairie episodes that would be wholesome family fare.

Two that I love that haven't been mentioned yet:

The Witches-- with Anjelica Huston, based on the Roald Dahl book. A couple of scenes are a bit scary, so not for very young or easily frightened children.

Fly Away Home-- gorgeous, sweet but not smarmy, with Jeff Daniels and Anna Paquin.

And one more vote for The Iron Giant!
