For anyone that read my poll about should I go to see the developmental ped or not about 2-3 weeks ago I'm finally updating! Sorry I almost forgot to with everything going around here lately.

She is not only walking, she is perfectly fine and healthy. She even started walking up the stairs the other day! I am so happy!! She has sensory integration and her OT suspects that is what caused the delay, now that we have been doing a lot of sensory therapy with her she assumes E no longer needs the input from crawling and has also become sure enough of herself to start walking full time. I can't believe she waited this long to walk, she scared us for awhile, she is 21 months. The developmental ped said he will keep her files and to call him immediately if she can't run in a few months, shows muscle weakness or regresses in her skills and he will run MRIs and such but for now she is just fine.

Neve, it's typical her LOL. If she is going to bother at all she is going to show off, when she first talked it was at 9 months and she didn't just say 1 word the little stinker had to go and put 2 words together to let us know she could talk! (Hi dad)And the other day she climbed on the kitchen island.

I am still very surpised she showed off with the stairs though, I figured she would walk across the room or something.

Woo hoo! That's fabulous! The stairs thing is kind of funny because Kaya climbed the stairs (crawled up the stairs) on her first birthday but didn't walk until 4.5 months later. I wonder if it's because in some ways it's more secure--i.e. they have something to hold onto?

I'm SOOOO glad you updated us on her. I know you were worried about her, but it's wonderful that everything else seems perfectly fine!

Now, forgive the ignorance, but what is sensory integration? Thanks!

Eileen

Eileen, it's kind of hard to explain and each kid is different so I will just try and keep this brief :). But I've been around these parts long enough for you all to know I'm very rarely brief! :o

For kids/adults with SID(the d is for dysfunction or disorder) everything is differet related to the nervous system and 5 senses being out of wack. For some kids they hate to be touched, other kids can't eat or eat very little because of oral defensive issues other kids like E have oral "seeking" behavior she loves crunchy things, will eat anything, chews on ice cubes and sucks a blanket or her clothing all the time. Noises are often a problem because their sense of hearing is more acute and little things sometimes a noise no one else can ever hear bugs them. Loudish noises tend to scare them because it's assumed they hear them much louder.

E's issues are touch mostly so that is why she hated to walk and loved to crawl. She got the deep pressure on her hands and knees that she craves from walking but didn't have to deal with the light touch and pressure of walking on her feet where she is the most sensitive. (she only tolerates barefoot or in robeez barefoot, nothing else on her feet!)We are doing sensory play and sensory therapy and we guess that desensitized her enough to be ok with walking and also gave her the sensory imput she wanted so much from crawling that she doesn't seem to need it as much so she got up and walked.

We were so concerned before because she was also loosing weight/not gaining so the two things together looked bad. It turns out she has silent reflux and food allergies and after the diet changes her weight issue cleared up.

There is a ton of stuff if you google if you were more interested but I tried to keep this short!

Wow, thanks for taking the time to explain it. I learned something new today! Your explanation was very clear and gives me some idea of the issues E was facing. I'm glad you were able to solve the weight issue problem, and I'm SOOOO glad she's not only walking, but climbing. :) Exciting things are afoot in your household!

Thanks again for your explanation.
