View Full Version : What's the deal with everyone's bra/or or strap showing?

JulieL

I can't figure this out for the life of me. Has there been a new change in fashion that you don't have to

1. hide your bra (black bra under white shirt)

or

2. hide your bra straps (yes I think the spaghetti strap shirts are cute too)

Why can I see grown women's bra straps all the time? Does this really not matter anymore? I personally think it looks sloppy - but maybe I'm in the dark ages! ;)

I'm not sure, but I'm in the dark ages with you. I hate to see that, but it does seem to be all the rage. I've noticed that on TV too, so I really think it's "in".

I haven't really noticed this in my area. But, I must say, I'd rather see bra straps than thong straps. :P Although I find all of it sloppy too.

I wonder if it's more a product of the type of clothing that's popular (e.g., strappy tanks). Personally, I hate strapless bras and since I don't like the brastrap showing thing either, I don't wear these.

I'm like Lisa. I don't wear spaghetti strap shirts because I only like to wear bras with straps. I remember it was a "big deal" if your bra strap was showing not that many years ago.

I think it's just part of our culture these days. Heck, I can't get over every time I look out my window there's a teenage boy walking by with his pants waist *below* his rear and showing his boxers. Um, hello? Why wear pants???????????

I feel like an 80-year-old grandma now. :P

Driving to work the other day I saw one of those kids when his pants fell down and nearly tripped him. Poor kid looked sooo mortified. Gotta admit, I giggled for several blocks.

LOL!! What the heck did he expect? And it's sad that he was probably mortified about tripping. The underwear showing? Not a problem at all.....:P

I thought I saw some fashion people lecture that it's better to have a strap showing than no bra (and I say AMEN to that). Then they add that the bra should have thin, pretty straps.

I guess those of us with the "full figured" minimizers are out of luck, huh? I'm pretty sure the straps on some of these bras are two or three times the width of standard spaghetti straps.

I'm giggling at the idea of those huge straps showing under one of those tiny shirts.

I must admit that I am guilty of this. I don't do it on purposebut I know it happens. Frankly, I just don't care that much. I've got *huge* boobs, even before BF, & I don't have a lot of options in bras (does *anyone* make a 32K nursing bra?). So I wear what's comfortable. That's usually a white Godess 511 in a 34 whatever biggest cup size they make with a spaghetti strap tank top. Yup, my bra strap shows. I could wear something with wider straps but it's *really* hot here & the straps *do* make a difference. Sometimes even part of the cup shows (*gasp*) on top depending on how well I was able to put myself back together after nursing DS #2 since I usually have to jump up to chase ofter DS #1 immediately after.

I'm not sure if this is *in* fashion, but it makes no difference to me. If I thought enough about this & how it bothers other people or that they think I'm sloppy, I'd get seriously depressed & spend all day crying. I'm already coping the best I can with godzilla boobs, hoping that I can hold-out long enough before getting surgery so that I can BF all my children. Some days its pretty iffy. So, if you see me at the library or at the grocery store & my bra is showing, just look away.

I have a 13 year old, so I see this ALL the time with his friends/classmates. The stupidest is when they wear the baggy, boxer-showing jeans AND a belt. I always want to tell them that the belt isn't very effective if I can see half their underwear.

Have you seen the bra straps that are clear plastic? At a festival a few weeks ago I saw a girl wearing this type of bra with a strapless shirt. Okay, but I can still see your strap, so what's the point? It looked so silly, especially since it was a shiny strap, make it matte at least!

I also tired of seeing thong straps hanging out.

Oh, and I love thin strapped tanks, but I get the kind with a built in bra!

I used to be anal about this - and about trying to find pretty bras so that at least if the strap did come out, it'd not obviously be a bra strap (what else it could've been, I couldn't tell you).

There's only so much a girl can do to keep her girls completely under wraps...and like the PP, I prefer seeing bra straps to thong parts any day.

Yea, I'm guilty here too. I don't do it on purpose, but hey, strap happens. And now that I am alone I always go to bed too late, waking up way late for work so I pay no attention to what I put on. I did have a light pink shirt with a black bra on the other day that I did not notice until noon.

If I have brushed my teeth an my hair does not have a zip code of its own, I call it a good day. ;)

Aww...hugs! As a super fashion-conscious person (LOL), I go with what's comfortable. Yes, I try to be neat and clean, but comfort over fashion every time for me. I'm VERY lucky (although I didn't use to think so) that I'm a 34A. So when the weather is warm, I wear a camisole (spaghetti straps) with shelf bra so I don't need an extra bra. But darn it, if I'm wearing a white t-shirt and the ONLY bra I have available is a black bra, I will sometimes wear and to heck with what people think. Do I notice when people's bra straps show? Sure, sometimes it's hard NOT to notice. But once I notice, I move on and I stop thinking about it.

Again, remember this is a super fashion-conscious person who wears t-shirts (and no bra or shorts/pants) around the house when it's warm, who wore a camisole or nursing bra inside of a robe and leggings during the winter when DD was first born, who wore leggings and button shirts (unbuttoned) over the camisoles during the winter after DD was first born, and tends to wear t-shirts and shorts or leggings outside the house. I just try to make sure I'm neat and clean. Besides, keep in mind that fashions come and go. :)

Hmm...did any of this make sense, LOL?

I hear ya!! I loathe the "messy look" as DH and I call it...bra straps, g-strings, butt crack.

I have actually recently discovered bras with adjustable straps so you can go from regular to halter to criss-cross by simply unhooking and re-hooking and I swear this is the neatest invention since sliced bread!

AMEN!!!! Having a clean matching outfit for work is a something I strive for every day. Make-up, what make-up? If there's a pimple cover it, if there are chapped lips chapstick. Otherwise, it's enough I show up every day. :)

Bless you e for reminding me I'm not alone. :)

I shudder anytime I see teenagers in the mall. My DDs will soooooo not be dressing that way. Of course since they won't be leaving the attic till they're 30, I really don't need to worry. ;)

I've got the hydraulic lift straps going on too. Believe me. NOBODY wants to see them!

All I can say is thank God my Grandmother isn't around to see these outfits! :P

The sad thing is that I remember when this became popular when my brother was in high school, and it's only gotten worse over the years. By worse, I mean the pants have gotten bigger and ride lower. ;) My mother absolutely refused to buy my brother the oversized pants it would have taken for him to have the exact "right" look, though she was willing to buy him baggy relaxed-fit pants - they just had to fit well enough at the waist so that they wouldn't be hanging off his hips. ;)

Luckily, he outgrew that craze, and has actually admitted since then that it's a somewhat silly one. He dresses *much* better these days. ;)

I remember something like this on What Not to Wear one day. Their basic thing was that no matter what, you really need to wear a bra, otherwise things just don't look that great. I can't remember their exact recommendation for what to wear if you *had* to wear a spaghetti strap top, though I know they were adamant about wearing a bra. They were more partial to tops with enough to cover bra straps, though, and were trying to talk the lady on the show out of the spaghetti strap tops she wore all the time.

Oh YAY! Another not-so-well-endowed lady posting in this thread. ;) :D

I, too, am a 34A. Do you find it as tough as I do to find bras that actually fit? It seems that there is always an abundance of B and C cups, but hardly any A's. Really narrows your choices. :(

I do like the cami option. However, even with the ones with built-in bras you've got to be careful. With some, you've still got to be careful about 'poking through'. Not much of a shelf bra, IMO.

I'm with the OP and PPs about it being tacky and sloppy to let underwear hang on the outside. There's a reason it's called UNDERwear, people! :P

Ha! Try being like a 38A or 40A. I've got a really wide back (former competitive swimmer - butterfly) with NO boobs. It is truly impossible to find a bra in that size. I just go with the generic one-size stretchy shelf-bra things.

Well can I sign up for this club as well? Lol, when I was measured for my wedding dress I measured a 31A. I've never actually seen a bra in 31, so that was interesting. Somebody should have told me *not* to choose a strapless wedding gown. I pulled it up all night.
As for the bra straps showing, I go back and forth. I was at a wake the other night and there were many high school/early college girls there. I can't tell you how many of them had bra straps showing. They didn't even try to match the shirts, either. Not really appropriate for that setting and not so appealing to me either. I guess they aren't trying to appeal to me anyway. ;)
That said, I do have a sparkly, wrinkly, lacey tank with spaghetti straps. I wear a bra with it and you can see the straps.

Yeah, but a little strap peeking out for a moment is a far cry from what I saw at the Atlanta airport the other night, which was a very well-endowed woman in a very supportive, wide-strapped, white bra, paired with...

wait for it...

A BLACK HALTER TOP.

I swear, my corneas almost exploded.

I actually once owned a 31A!! Of course, I was 9. Seriously. x(

However, as one of those in the circus freak boob camp, I got a whole new level of understanding when I went bra shopping with my flat chested buddy. At the time, I was a 38DDD, and she was a 32A. After 2 hours, we both went home empty handed.

I would kill to be a 38DDD now, though!

Another 34A girl. Sometimes I think I may be even shrinking to an AA (gasp!). I asked DH if things were smaller than pre-pg, because I can't remember being this small. He's claiming he has no idea. I miss my B's (the C's were OK, but I really liked the B's!).

Anyway, I'm one of those who only wears strappy tanks with built in bras, or tanks with wide straps to hid the bra straps. Then again, support-wise I've been running around the house loose in a t-shirt after work with no ill effects, so the built-in bras are just gravy ;)

It is mostly for teenagers, that look. My oldest does it all the time along with layering several tank tops. If you look at the teen stores, everything is camisole and tanks, some being very low cute. They just pile the stuff on. The theory behind different color bra straps is that if it is going to show, make it a fashion statement. No nude color bodywear for them!

As for the boxers showing, it is called "jailing" or "jailers". When you got to jail, they take away your belts.

I'm in the same club too -- I've never really filled out an A cup that well, having engorgement a few days after birth was an amazing change though - but it only lasted a few days.

Now if only the rest of my body were in similarly small proportions, I would be pleased!

My wedding dress was short-sleeved and the top part was lacy. I used the clear straps so that I could wear a normal bra. They didn't show at all, but that could be because they were under fabric.

The only reason I wear those built-in bra things when I'm outside is because I don't want my nipples to show through and they sort of help. But I have been known to wander around outside in just a t-shirt, but then I worry that someone might be able to see the impression through it. But at home, yes, definitely--no bra at all is much more comfortable. :)

Today's mystery sighting: Gentleman walking down the street with 3 inches of his grey patterened boxers showing above his shorts. Not novel, you say? But this was an otherwise respectable looking Japanese guy in his mid-30s, with a pressed T-shirt tucked into those boxers, and the shorts were pale blue knit. I have no idea whether it was a fashion statement or a wardrobe error. Either way it was a bit baffling.
