Does anyone know of a pullover or cardigan pattern for infants with a gauge of 3.5 sts / inch? I can find patterns like that for toddlers, but not for babies. I have a yummy yarn I want to try, though...

Not quite a pattern, but have you tried looking at "The Sweater Workshop" by Jacqueline Fee? If you have measurements (you could get basic ones from another infant sweater pattern) and the gauge, I think she provides a template for designing your own sweater (based on Elizabeth Zimmerman's percentage system). At least this is how I remember it, I haven't looked at the book in a few years.

There is also a website (http://www.knittingfool.com/index.cfm) that can calculate patterns for a few different sweater types based on size and gauge.

Of course, both of these sources are probably geared towards adult sizes, so I'm not sure how they would handle something tiny.

I've seen versions of the "5 hour baby sweater" (do a google search...it's all over the place) with a gauge of 4st/inch, which is pretty darn close (worsted weight yarn with 10 1/2 needles).

(You might also try posting in the Crafts section. Jen)

"The Yarn Girl's Guide to Kids Knits" has one pattern that knits at 3.5 sts/in but the size only goes down to one year. I couldn't find a good picture of the pattern but it is a cute cardigan with a collar and contrasting "trim". They have a ton of other darling sweaters that have sizes for younger infants in 3 and 4 sts/in. Maybe you could go up or down a needle size to get to three or four. Anyhow the book is simply full of darling things to knit that are just on on the funky side. HTH

I found these at Lion Brand's site:
http://freeknittingpatterns.lionbrand.com/patterns/kwe-kimonoLayette.html - 4 sts/in
http://freeknittingpatterns.lionbrand.com/patterns/kwc-babySweater.html - 3 sts/in

They aren't 3.5 sts/in, but you could just use a different needle size to get the correct gauge for the pattern.

Again, not quite the right gauge, but close: http://www.yarnforward.com/dannyfree.html - 4.5 sts/in

Rachel,
I just one some books on e-bay for patterns of specifically baby items. I'm sure one of them will have what you are looking for. If you don't find anything in the next week or two check again w/me and I should have them. I know some of them were just too precious for words.

I am just finishing up a sweater from The Yarn Girls Guide... - it's a great pattern - very easy. I highly recomend this book even if they don't have the guage for a cardigan for the yarn you want to use. THe patterns are really well written adn the sweaters use fabulous yarn - not just "baby" yarn.

Good luck!
