View Full Version : Stupid question: Do theatres charge you less??

I haven't been to the movies in a loooong time, and I have 3 films I want to see this weekend. If I buy tickets for all three to watch them all in a row (only one theatre is showing them in Chicago, so that part is easy), is there some sort of a discount???

I told you it was a stupid question! But I'm all for saving money these days ;)

I don't think they'll give you a quantity discount but the matinees will be a few dollars cheaper. Enjoy your flicks! :)

Yes, I believe it's called a "five-finger discount." :)

I've never done it (honestly!), but I've heard reports of others just staying in the theater and getting a double (in your case, triple) header.

Otherwise, no, I've never heard of a package deal.

Meaning sneaking in?? No, I actually do want to pay, despite my arguably loose morals otherwise ;) This theatre shows indy/foreign movies and I want to support that. I've been waiting a long time for one of these to be released here ;)

oooh- what are you seeing? March of the Penguins is on my list, but I need to pick a movie for monthly girls movie night. What else is out there?

Ah... yeah, I wouldn't want to sneak in at that kind of theater either. The other ones I wouldn't feel *as* bad about. Then again, I probably couldn't find 3 blockbuster movies I'd want to see back-to-back anyway.

The art house near where I grew up did have some sort of discount card (you could buy a membership). If you're only seeing three and don't have plans for another day, probably not worth it. We always got to pay the student rate, which was a big discount.

Since it's an indy theater, just call them and see what they can work out for you. Good luck!

I'm seeing for sure:
--The Beat my heart skipped
--Happily ever after (this is a silly French one with three middle aged men in Paris I think, about marriage and such nonsense, but it actually sounds good to me and might be decent for your girly night)

i can post a short review for this if you want.

Wondering about the third one:
--Broken flowers (with Bill Murray)

Edited to add this Broken Flowers one may sound good too for girls night. March of the Penguins I'm not that interested in, but at least it seems kid-friendly.

I decided I'll just see my first two, both before 4 o'clock so they'll be matinee price :) I'm so excited. I have a date with myself ;)
If you end up seeing one of them, PM me so we can discuss ;)

Do you belong to any organizations that might get a discount price?
By me, members of SAG get in for half price, and at certain theaters FDNY employees get in for a buck.

No, but I planned so that the first movie at least was the first showing for the day, so I got the cheaper one. I could have totally cheated too, as they showed the two in the same theatre (LOL), but as it was I bought both tickets ahead of time (not that I would have cheated, it just was shockingly easy!)

sometimes you can get discounted tickets through AAA. Also, the Entertainment Book usually has discounts for movie theaters.

So, Eri --
Did you go today? What did you like best?
NPR was about to air a review of the Bill Murray one yesterday *just* as I had to get out of the car, so I didn't get to hear the review. I really wanted to hear it after I saw you were going to see it.

I just saw the two French ones as I wanted to save the Bill Murray one to watch with DH (and spare him the subtitles).
The first one, "Happily ever after" was a bit of a cliche (think French people having extra-marital affairs while chain smoking), basically about the impossibility of monogamy, loving 2 people at the same time, etc. Three good male-friends in middle age dealing. But it was actually very entertaining, and I plan to watch it again with DH when it comes out...It had two tiny appearances by Johnny Depp (sp?) but I never realised how good this guy looks, arguably it's worth seeing the movie just for those two brief moments ;)
If you don't mind the subtitles, definately something to watch with the girls. Sure to have something to chat afterwards, anyway ;)

The second one, "the beat my heart skipped" got better reviews than the first one, but I didn't think it anything special. The protagonist guy is also very good looking though, that's about the only thing I can say about this one :)

edited to fix typos/clarify

ooh. I'll see if the Happily... one is playing nearby. DH would probably like to see the Bill Murray one with me anyway, as we've enjoyed many of his movies (old and newer) together.

Johnny Depp - yes, I loved him since 21 Jump Street. Man, he ages well. Can't say he looked "hot" in those Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ads though.

Thanks for the reviews! Now... to plan our mom's discussion group movie night out!

well, he's definately hot in this one...and he doesn't do/say much.

I liked him so much I thought it was worth confessing to DH....LOL
;)
