Please bear with me. I only have one close friend who has more than one child and she's shared with me some but we have different body types so I wonder if her view of pregnancy was clouded by that.... I have a question for you experienced moms about my changing body:

My lower back is *killing* me almost all the time. I had back pain with dd but it wasn't until I was 30 weeks or so. I'm generally feeling now like I did with dd at the end of the pg. Is that normal or, maybe better said, typical? Is it just because my body's done it already? I keep wondering the last few days what I'll feel like when I'm 9 months pregnant at this rate. I look like a crotchety old lady when I get up from chairs.

Feel free to share any other changes you've experienced. Time is flying these days. I'll be 9 months pregnant again before I know it. Wow!

TIA

Elizabeth

Are you doing a lot of bending and lifting with your little one? I notice that my back feels worse after days of that, and better after a few days of work (when I don't do much lifting at all).

How about seeing a chiropractor to help get the kinks out? I love my chiro!!

I didn't have problems with back pain (a little sciatica with the 1st), but your body is definitely different after you've had one pregnancy. By 3mos of pregnancy #2, I felt like my uterus was hanging around my knees (sorry so graphic!). Everything is just looser!

But I don't think you should have back pain that's killing you all the time--what's your ob say?

I'm just at 15 weeks and I look and feel like I'm 6 months along. With this one I was in maternity clothing at 10 weeks and needed a pregnancy pillow to sleep by twelve. I've been blaming my back pain on the size of my belly plus my chair at work sucks. Fortunately I only have 5 more days left yeah!! Oh, I also think part of my problem is that w/ Madeline when I felt tired, achey, etc. I was always able to rest. Now I'm constantly chasing after an 18 month old and can only rest if she's napping or DH is home.

I had terrible back pain with my first pregnancy, starting as early as 15 weeks. This time around, it surprisingly barely struck at all. I do feel it start to creep up on me though if I try to do too much in a day.

It's nice to know there are other second-timers with similar stories -- people have been asking me "when I'm going to pop" since I was like 20 weeks. It doesn't help that someone else in the office who's due 3 weeks BEFORE me looks so tiny next to me. The back pain has been a big issue here too. A couple things that helped for me -- body pillow at night, and a referral to a physical therapist who showed me some gentle stretches and postural changes to help ease the pressure off the hips and back. I tried to minimize carrying the toddler too.

These helped me a lot until recently, now nothing helps (I'm 34 weeks). Good luck to you!

much, much more lower back pain this time around. FWIW, I asked my dr to clear me for prenatal massage. She gave me a dr's note saying it's ok to get pregnancy massage approx. every 2 weeks. The note is important bc it means my insurance will pay part of the massage. Woohoo!

Ugh, my back has been killing me this whole pregnancy-it bothered me some with ds but is much worse this time. Mine tends to be mid/upper back more than lower and I think it is from lifting ds and from shifting posture due to the weight in the front. I have a prenatal yoga dvd and a pilates one, when I was doing them regularly my back felt much better, I'm 37 weeks now so haven't been feeling up to much exercise, hopefully it will go away after delivery.

I had the opposite experience. My back really bothered me during my first PG but not at all during the second. The only thing I figured was that I spent a lot more time during the first PG sitting since I was still working. As a full time mom during the second PG there just wasn't as much time to sit. :)

This pregnancy is so much different for me too in that all those typical symptoms are coming on sooner and much stronger. My back (for me it's my upper back more so) has been killing me. I have to second Lori's recommendation about seeing a chiropractor. I just started seeing one who is prenatal certified and it is the best. I wish I had started weeks ago. I'm going to go every week until I deliver. I have been sleeping so much better and my aches and pains are so much less bothersome. She also claims that women who are under chiropractic care before delivery have an easier and shorter L&D. I'm hoping! :)

Hope you get some relief.

Me too- this time has definitely seemed 'worse' in that I am achier, and the baby feels like it is hanging halfway out! Saw The March of the Penguins movie last night and I though boy I waddle just like them- how embarrassing! A pillow between my kness at night helps- as does my trusty heating pad :)

HTH- It'll be over before you know it...

Thanks, mamas! It's very nice to know it's not just me.

I do carry DD alot. She's not a reliable hold-my-hand walker yet. She's only 16 months so I tend to carry her when we're out.

The pain has gotten even worse. I am definitely going to make an appointment to see a chiro. I had been planning on it towards the end but I'm pretty sure I need it NOW. I've also heard it makes for shorter labor. I'm all for that after 38 hours with DD! ;)

With dd, the pain would be towards day's end and when I awoke I'd be good for the day. The pain is constant now--no amount of rest helps. I wonder if I injured myself somehow, but I don't remember when I did, if so. I guess it could have been a progressive injury.

At any rate, I appreciate the feedback and suggestions. I'm going to call my midwife on Monday as well to see if she has any thoughts. Should have done it Friday...

You're all the best! Thank you. :)
