I'd like to try this to see if DS would be at all receptive but am a little grossed-out imagining all that pee & poop on my carpets. What about if he pees behind the couch & I don't find it until later? Is there some simple way to avoid this that I don't know about or do I just have to suck it up & spend a lot of time cleaning poop off the floor?

I think it all depends on what you're willing to do. We have hardwood floors, so I'm planning on just rolling up all the area carpets and letting her run around naked. I've already done it outside this summer on occasion and she's pooped once (didn't even notice that she did it, which is how I know she's not ready) and she's peed several times. She's also peed in the house, and I just wipe it up. I have my homemade antiseptic spray on hand at all times. It's not that big a deal, except that you can't let her roam freely--i.e. you have to keep an eye on her at all times.

How about training pants?

I don't think I'd care if we had all hardwood. Unfortunately, we do not :(. Now if I could keep him in the kitchen all day... hmmmm.....

I try that every once in a while. DS doesn't seem to notice being soaked *at all*.

Actually, I think DH's aunt did that with her sons. She just kept him in the kitchen all day with her (while she canned or whatever) and let him run around naked. She said it didn't take too long to PT him that way.

ETA: the other thing is if you're doing it right now, maybe you could let him roam around outside naked as well.

Eileen,
May I ask how you make the antiseptic spray?

Sure! It's from Clean House, Clean Planet (LOVE that book) by Karen Logan. It's called Merlin's Magic Antiseptic Spray:

Fill a 16 oz spray bottle almost full with distilled or filtered water. Add 3 tablespoons of Dr. Bronner's or some other liquid soap (glycerin based--dishwashing soap tends to suds too much). I like to use the Peppermint scented Dr. B's. Add 20-30 drops of TTO. Then shake. I LOVE the smell, but I do know some people don't like the smell of TTO. But I use it on everything I want to sanitize, including my toilets, the high chair, my floors (when cleaning up pee or poop or food), even DD's hands on occasion.

Set aside an extra $100 to have the carpets cleaned afterward. ;)

Seriously, while I am going to have the carpets cleaned, we haven't had the kind of messes I would expect. I gave DS "special towels" and had him try to sit on those when he was playing. There have only been a few times when he's missed the towels, and honestly, those were mostly with training pants rather than nothing. He's never pooped on the floor, but he's always been very predictable about that and been able to tell me when it's coming since he was 18 mos. so he may be an exception. I also kept the potty very close by.

It's really worked well for us. He's potty trained when he's "neked" and it only took about a week. With training pants he still has a few accidents, but we're so much further along that we were. Running around without any clothes on really helped drive the concept home! Being able to *see* the pee-pee arrive made a huge difference for him.

Actually, one of DH's coworkers PT'd his 22 month old son in less than a week using this method. Well, as he put it, his wife did all the work since he wasn't home, but it still worked great. He said, "It costs $105 to PT a child. $5 for a t-shirt or two for your kid to run around diaperless for a week, and $100 to clean the carpets afterwards. :)

Well, DS doesn't poop when we are out of the house now, so I'm pretty confident that's a sign he's getting ready to PT. He does have nekky time and we've haven't had a problem w/poop since I've noticed this. He will occassionally pee when neked, but he can hold it for a good while....Maybe hold-off until you notice him not pooping out of the house?
