I'm trying to get myself feeling more together this fall (yep, watched the Mom Jeans clip, and although I don't have any Mom jeans per se, my wardrobe needs some updating).

What are the top 5 items you would buy (or have purchased) for yourself for fall? They can be from Target or from Nordstrom--as long as they are cute and stylish or classic and timeless? Would they be a good fitting pair of jeans, some Ugg boots, some high-healed boots, a favorite brand of a handbag? What kind of shoes?

I can't wait to hear to get some good ideas.

TIA! : )

No Ugg boots, definately ;)

I plan to get an outfit or two from H&M they have these dress/pant combos with huge belts, want to try one of those.

Some sort of tweed outfit, they seem to be in style still.

A beret that fits right. had ne which I lost and have never been able to find another one that fits quite right.

Oh how fun!
I got my Uggs last year and Anna some on the swap so don't have an excuse for those....

We have a wedding to go to in 3 weeks. I want a really sexy dress for it. Have to leave the kids home so it doesn't even have to be nursing friendsly

I want a kick a** pair of shoes. Black-of course. But I haven't been with it enough to see what's in....

I want some Ann Taylor type clothes for work-not too dressy-casually elegant. I know I am not being very specific, am I....

I seriously in need of some updating as well. I don't have 5 things yet, but I did purchase some boot cut jeans from Gap yesterday. I got the "just below" style (I guess it zips just below your belly button, I dont have the stomache for low-rise). I'm short and I have a hard time finding jeans in my size that aren't a mile long. Gap has what they call "ankle length" and they fit wonderfully. Its a start, now I need to find some nicer tops to go with them! I'm looking forward to everyone else's ideas too!

-- more t-shirts. mine are looking pretty ragged.

-- some cool Keens or Born slip-ons

-- more cute, comfy pants from Janeville. And one of their long cardigan chunky knit sweaters

-- HA's smocked French cotton blouse

I don't really care if I look like a mom or not. I wear what is comfortable and moderately stylish, and I think I look pretty good for the most part. ETA: I think the bigger problem is getting trapped in the styles that were popular when you graduated from HS and/or college. My BIL & SIL are like this.

I just saw the skit and LMBO. I used to refer to that style of jeans as "Mom jeans" when I was in HS and college. I know that they've redesigned a lot of their things, but the "Mom butt" styled pants at LE is a big reason that I don't shop there for my clothes.

- a plum velvet jacket

-a purse in black leather, with brass details, preferrably chunky (like this but with brass, not silver)

http://www.bananarepublic.com/browse/product/561/mip_5618111.htm?cs_catalog=BR%5FFall1%5F2005&cs_category=4004&cs_id=5618111

-a wide black woven belt (and a brown one), at least 2.5 inches wide, hopefully wider

-new brown high heeled boots ( I really like a pair in a magazine I saw, they're supposed to be at American Eagle, but I have not located them yet in person)

http://www.ae.com/AE_ProductPage.process?RestartFlow=t&CatalogFlag2=Shoes&Merchant_Id=1&Gender=Womens&Section_Id=460&Product_Id=13468804&CatalogFlag=FloorSet&Section_Title=CasualsandBoots&ColorString=0411_6303_200

- a cozy cardigan, hopefully cream colored, belted around the waist

I.love.to.shop.for.fall.clothes.

The only problem is that I have is trying to hold off on wearing them until the weather is appropriate.

Sweating is not stylish, unless you're running. ;-)

I have been feeling in such a rut lately that I currently am pouring over the Boden and Nordstrom catalogues earmarking cute things. Two things I already picked up from Garnet Hill and I can't wait to wear them:

-- a nice fitting jeans jacket (I have wanted one forever)
-- a light cashmere wrap cardigan (easy to wear but a little more stylish than a button front cardigan)

and still on my wish list:
-- a killer pair of jeans (maybe two) I'm so hard to fit so it's time to call in the personal shopper and try on how ever many it takes to find exactly the right pair. I'm glad I didn't see the SNL segment, I probably would have started crying.
-- a great pair of black boots to go with the killer jeans
-- a flowy, sexy top, something like a camisol (sp) but with more coverage since I need it.
-- a suede inside jacket with no buttons just a cute beaded tie at the waste (p. 71 of the Nordstrom catalogue I got in the mail, LOL!)

I'm looking forward to other ideas!

Lisa, check out nordstrom.com. There is a section at the bottom to request a catalogue. The one I just got was called boho luxe and if you go to the women's section, you can click on boho luxe (it's on the first page) and see everything and more that was in the catalogue.

Frye boots. Frye boots, Frye boots, Frye boots!
The beat-up looking brown ones. My b-day was last week and I thought DH was going to get me some... no such luck.

Both of the Nordstrom's near me have been sold out for months and don't expect to get any in until November :(

I absolutely love argyle sweaters, cardigans, vests, etc.

I just bought a hooded zip-up cardigan at Harolds.
It looks like a close-up of an argyle. Love it!

Maybe by asking this question, I am admitting that
I am in need of fashion help! :)

But, what are Frye boots? Can you show me a picture
of the boots you are talking about?

Was just at Target today and they have some super cute fall-colored cords (teal, pumpkin, cream, brown, navy....I'll take one of each, please!). Last year I got baby blue cords from the Gap and I'm not loving them. They're too long on me and slightly too big in the hips, but one size down was too snug. So, not only is $24 much cheaper than $54, but I'm betting I'll like the Mossimo ones better.

I really want some gaucho pants so I can wear them with knee-high black leather boots (this apparently is all the rage for fall). But I'm wondering if they'll look good on my non-toothpick frame. I hated them during the summer, but the tweeds and solids look great for fall.
http://www.windsorpeak.com/dc/user_files/28931.jpg

I'd like a bolero sweater to wear with some of my fall-colored summer dresses.

That purple Velvet jacket camelgia mentioned sounds great.

Some chunky beads.

See Fall trends article:
http://www.suntimes.com/output/lifestyles/cst-ftr-silhouette17.html

But that's it for my trendy side. I like to stick to jeans, classic tees and business chic.

Ooh, good thread! I love fall, and shopping for fall clothes. It reminds me of back to school time, when my grandparents would take us shopping! Makes me want a 64 box of crayons. :)

Well, I will be maternity shopping for fall, but that is OK. I will need a few things since last time I was PG in the summer.
I'm looking for:

**a good pair of jeans...like the roll style at the Gap, maybe I'll try on those
**a couple of long sleeve shirts, something cute and sorta stylish
**a cute pair of clark's...preferably slip ons (have my eye on a couple of pair)
**cords...if I can find ones without the full panel (ugh)
**a cute, new diaper bag or large bag that I can use as a diaper bag

Corie, love your sweater from Harold's, love Harold's! That is a really cool argyle look. :)

I saw this cardigan in my Gorsuch catalog
and I want it. (It is a man's sweater but I could
always buy a small and it may be a little big.)

But, then my eye caught the price. $1,298.
Wow! Does the sweater come with the male model?

Gosh! Too bad! Because I LOVE this sweater!

Sorry the picture won't attach!

LOL! I'm sure I'm dating myself but I am cracking up over that picture of the model in gauchos. I remember wearing them in the late 70's before my teen years. Whenever I catch an episode of the Love Boat I see those pants and for some reason, I associate them mostly with Tennille! Of course I had the same haircut as her too. Swoon!

I can't believe they are back and at least looking WAY better than they did back then. But I didn't look good in them then and I still wouldn't look good in them today.

I just got my Boden fall catalog and a lot of their stuff is beautiful! I've never ordered from them before - is the stuff as nice in person as it is in the catalog?

I like it too.

Sure I remember it...but I was in Kindergarten during its hey day. I'm snickering with you. Well, sometimes I feel old, and sometimes I feel very young. Regardless, it's good to see those old clothes my mom saved from the 60s, 70s and 80s have come and gone in style throughout the years.

Seeing as I will be post-partum this fall, I think I'll wish for some items that I can use during the flabby, jelly post-partum phase, and the later on during the flabby, jelly normal phase. :)

Hmmm...
1. A pair of really, really comfortable shoes that isn't ugly. I'd love some of the Birkenstock Maryjanes. Good arch support will keep all my relaxed ligaments well supported!
2. Cashmere Cardigan in either avocado green or brown
3. Maybe some cute, comfy skirts so I don't feel totally frumpy in elastic-waisted pants for 4 months.
4. A nice jewelry set...something ala Anthropologie
5. Some nice v-neck tops to show of my momma cleavage!

Non-clothing items...this is a lot easier ;)
1. Aveda Foot Care Stuff
2. Aveda Tea - big jar!
3. Hair cut and color (ahhhhhhh...)
4. Nice candles, from Aveda of course
5. Basically, anything to induce calm and serenity!

I am in need of new Fall items too.

So far I only have:

-Gap's new 'curvy' jeans.
-Tan blazer (cute and cheap from Target!)

I'd like to get some nice comfy sweaters. And then I need some shoes!! NO clue what kind. . . something comfy but stylish.

I started my shopping. I ordered the cashmere wrap sweater in rose from Garent Hill (thanks, Paula, for the tip) and these shearling clogs by Vanelli from zappos.com. I hope they won't be too small. They didn't have all of the sizes left, so I had to order my regular size, despite other reviewers' recommendation to order up. They are a knock off of an Ann Klein clog that costs twice as much. So if they work, fantastic.

http://www.windsorpeak.com/dc/user_files/28997.jpg

I tried on curvy jeans at the Gap, but forget it. These things didn't work for me at all (and my waist is much smaller than my hips). The super low waist, but hanging out thing doesn't work for me. I'm a fairly small person (well, small to medium after having 2 kids). Man. Who are these supposed to fit? I'll have to try somewhere else for jeans.

I DID read a NY Times article about a NEW STORE opening up, catering to the over 35 crowd who wants to be stylish but doesn't want to dress like 17 year-olds. It's a GAP co. store, and it will be called Fourth and Towne. Here's the link: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/08/24/business/24gap.html

Sounds pretty good. I can't wait! I'm always at a loss for where to shop. It's typically either Ann Taylor Loft or Ann Taylor with a sprinkle of Gap, Nordstrom, J. Jill, and other dept. stores for me. It gets old!

Speaking of J. Jill, what do you think of these boots? I like that they are high boots but without a super high heel (so one might actually be able to walk). Would be cute with a skirt, but also under jeans. I wonder if it'd be too tall on someone only 5'2".
