I've been on prenatals since 2003, first for pregnancy then for nursing. We just weaned, but I ordered more prenatals purely out of habit. I figure I can switch back to a regular vitamin rather than shelling out $40 for another 3 month prenatal supply. So what are you taking for a multi-vitamin?

I take an OTC Prenatal formula from my supermarket. Costs $8 for 100 tablets, and they sometimes have a BOGO offer.

Thanks for asking this. I was just wondering the other morning what vitamin I should start taking once DS weans. I don't want to get out of the habit of taking a vitamin!

My DH and I take a childrens chewable vitamin once a day. We use the ones from Costco. The bottle even has the dosage for adults on it. It works out to about $.04 a vitamin. These are very similar to Flintstones vitamins but much cheaper. I will see if I can find a link to the ones we get.

ETA: It is $.04 a vitamin not $.03 like I originally posted. Sorry

I continued taking prenatals, have been taking them for over 3 years. I buy the target ones, they are pretty inexpensive. I never did take the Rx ones, could never keep them down.

Since I knew we were planning to have #2 anyway, I figured I might as well keep taking them. I'll probably continue for awhile, as we are up in the air about having #3....don't want to think about that right now! LOL

I take a prenatal vitamin when I'm pregnant. When I'm not pregnant, I take a One-A-Day Women's vitamin plus a tablet of folic acid each day.

When not pg, I just take the Sams Club generic daily multivitamin. We were buying Centrum, but couldn't justify the cost when they are so similar.

I take the store-brand multivitamin that I get at my grocery. It is $5-6 for 100, depending on if they are on sale or not. I also take Lysine tablets because it helps my hair to not fall out (not kidding -- it got really bad before I started them).

I have to start taking folic acid -- aren't you supposed to take it for like 6 months before you TTC? I will probably start on prenatals as well pretty soon....but I will put them in the bottle from my old regular multivitamins so no one catches on (I keep our vitamins in the kitchen cabinet where any visiting family members could easily stumble upon them). The sex jokes I would have to endure if anyone knew we were TTC would just be too much. :P

Is it 6 months for folic acid prior to TTC? For some reason I thought it was 3, but I'm not informed about this stuff anymore.

I tried Sam's Club and Costco prenatals - between the two, the Sam's Club ones were easier to swallow.

I switched over and really love the New Chapter Perfect Prenatals, though. They're basically prenatal vitamins and then some - with probiotics and other essential cruciferous extracts that are critical to women's health. You can even take these on an empty stomach and you won't feel nauseous. You have to take four, which is a pain b/c they're big, but I feel different on these.

How much are they? Did I miss that on the website? I'm really into probiotics. DD goes to daycare, and I'm trying to cut down on my sick days by taking a GNC mega vitamen (twice daily - yuck) and drinking yogurt and kefir.

Perfectly said, Ry. I am also a member of the folate pimping choir. ;-)

According to my OB, nothing. I think there's one Rx prenatal out there that has fish oil in it, and maybe one with extra iron, but the regular ones are just like the OTC's. For some people with unbelievably good prescription plans, the Rx's end up costing less than OTC's, but I'm not one of those people.

From what I've been told, the Rx vites have much more iron than the OTC ones. You need a doc's script because of the iron content in the Rx ones.
