I love when studies like this come out-- too bad we don't tend to pay much attention to them in the US. But every study out there that has looked at this has shown the same thing: that birthing outside of a hospital is as safe or safer than birthing in one for low-risk women.

This is good to see considering that I just booked a consultation appointment with the homebirth midwives in my area :) I never in a million years would have imagined myself having a homebirth...It was all your doing Rachel ;) I am so excited!

Awesome study :) I like the differentiation between "planned homebirth" and "homebirth" mentioned...some of the previous studies have been swayed by including women who gave birth at home but were unattended and had not planned for a homebirth.

I can't wait to hear more about the possible upcoming homebirths on this board :)

AHHHH yes the homebirth where it is totally unattended and almost not even witnessed...that would be me!!!!

Now I know if I get pregnant again that I'd probably have another homebirth not only if I want one but suspect my body would just do it. I laugh as I think about it for what is there to plan in my case...you just walk around the corner and have a baby!!!!!!

I remember someone kind of laughing over me sweating a birth plan Edited to add with Tristan my first(she had more than one child I think so it wasn't so new to her) and now I feel the same way if I had another home birth ... honestly I think of this often I really don't know what I'd do to prepare and wonder if I really need to do anything.

Thanks for the link. I'll have to pass this on to my DH so maybe I'll stop hearing the comment "why do people have babies at home? what happens if there's an emergency?" Ugh. Hello, people used to have babies at home all the time... (Sorry, not trying to turn this into a bitching thread. DH's lack of understanding on this subject annoys me.)

My hubby was telling the story to his motorcycle buddies on their email list, several of the guys are from Vietnam.

so here is Steve talking the "poop" as if he did everything when I clearly don't even say I did anything...baby B's did all the work in my case :)

But Steve was quickly deflated when one of his friends said something like "ummm that's nice...my mom had me in the living room while a war was going on"...he was so not impressed :)

Heheee Neve...:) Your body just did what it wanted to do :) I hope you weren't offended by what I wrote...I just meant that for the purpose of doing a study on the safety, it is important to differentiate between women who "accidentally" gave birth at home and therefore may have been entirely alone (not even DH around for example) vs. planned a homebirth, kwim? I think your birth story was positively awesome...what a story indeed :)

I am not sure if I'll ever get pg again or not, but if I do, I would love to have a homebirth. DS was my first and was born 6 hours after my water broke (which was the start of labor for me), and I walked around 3cm dilated for a week or so with him before I went into labor. I wonder if I ever had a second if it would happen pretty fast...sort of like your situation.

I delivered DS at a hospital w/ midwives. When my water broke I assumed I'd be hanging out laboring at home for a while, but I called when my water broke and my midwife wanted me at the hospital in no more than an hour, and we had a 45 minute drive, so it was quite a dash out the door! Apparently they were worried things were going to happen fast since I was 3cm a few days before at my last appt.

I was a midwife/doula patient and though I have to admit I have not clicked on the link from what you have said I totally agree, there is a difference in keeping stats from someone who planned it vs someone who didn't. And the stats of someone who didn't and all that could have happen should not be weighed as risks with a planned one. No doubt about it!!!

I am totally pro home birth-always have been even before mine :)
I'm pro birth any way that a women wants to have her birth personally, I just wish everyone could have the birth that they so want.

My friends wife is having a home birth in Dec...so I will have some contact for you and some experience with them if you need them.

I also have a doula who I adore and am pretty familiar with our Triangle mid wives and the groups...

By the way we must get together sometime!!!!

LOL, I can just see the look on Steve's face, too. :) Living room floor, during a war--that's pretty impressive and tops quite a few births!

Thanks Neve! If we're ever blessed with another pregnancy, I'll be begging for your midwife/doula information for sure :)

And yes, we must get together some day!
